No parent wants to see their child lying in a hospital bed, but Brazilian mother Tayane Gandra had no choice but to make frequent trips to the hospital with her 8-year-old son, Guilherme. The boy has a rare genetic condition, but things took a tragic turn when he slipped into a coma. Miraculously, after 16 days, he woke up, and Tayane couldn’t hold back her emotions when she reunited with him. A video of the heartfelt moment between mother and son was shared on Gandra’s Instagram page, @tayanegandra.

"It's been 16 days without being near you," Gandra wrote in the caption alongside the video. "Mommy flew here to come and hug you! You are our most beautiful miracle. Thank you for being ours and we love you to infinity and beyond." The clip was filmed by her husband Estevao, who called her after getting the pleasant news of their son waking up. According to Aleteia, Guilherme caught a cold that developed into pneumonia. Since he was already suffering from a rare condition called epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica, Guilherme's lungs could not function well.

As his pneumonia worsened, he started having breathing difficulties and then slipped into a 16-day-long coma. His stressed mother stayed by his side day and night and prayed for his recovery. However, fatigue took over her and she went back home to get some shut-eye. That was when her husband and Guilherme's dad called her to rush to the hospital urgently. Estevao told Gandra that their boy had woken up and was calling for his mom. In the clip, Gandra was seen running toward Guilherme's hospital room, looking disheveled. Guilherme was sitting up on the bed, connected to monitors and tubes and was looking drowsy. The mom rushed to hug her son and they broke down into sobs.

The boy's rare hereditary condition causes his skin to blister easily upon the slightest friction or injury. The absence of collagen in his body causes his skin to become fragile. "Guilherme is a very strong boy. A child of great faith, who has hope for better days," the boy's mother explained to the outlet. As of 2024, a now-10-year-old Guilherme was still battling his health issues. According to Inside FIFA, the boy has been an avid supporter of the Brazilian football club CR Vasco da Gama. He was awarded the FIFA Fan Award in 2024 for his extraordinary courage and devotion to the sport and the team.

“My love for Vasco is huge,” Guilherme told the outlet. “Vasco helps me forget the bad things and I don't feel any pain. I have only got one thing to say. As long as there is a child's heart, Vasco will be immortal.” President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva invited the boy to the award ceremony. "Very happy to hear that Gui has won The Best (FIFA) award as the best fan in the world. He represents the children of Brazil and we are very proud of him. Another hug from me, dear Gui," the president said about Guilherme.
