The living situation in America is progressively getting worse. The cost of everything is skyrocketing, with millions struggling to make ends meet. They are vulnerable for not being able to pay for their insurance. Families are trying to come up with ways to survive, with many cutting down on essentialities and lowering their lifestyles. Angela is a mother of three - who goes on TikTok by @just_angela_m - and she uses government assistance to scrape by along with her job. As an employee, she aims to go up the ranks but is given a rude awakening when an opportunity like that presents itself.

Angela took to TikTok to share about her predicament. The mother begins by stating that she is upset about some recent events in her life regarding her promotion. She says, "I was asked if I wanted to take a promotion… and I would love to do it. I want to do it, oh my God. Lord knows I want to do it, right?" After having a moment of joy, all her hopes came crashing to the ground when she realized that the promotion would actually deteriorate her situation rather than improve it.

After getting the offer, she immediately sat down to calculate and was heartbroken. She thought she would have good news, as her income was doubling, but in her own words, "Math isn't mathing." Her harsh realization was that the increased income would make her ineligible for government assistance. The removal of government assistance will lead to less money even with the bump she will get because of promotion.

The promotion will give her $60,000 a year, which, for an individual, is a good income to live on. But this income will not at all be sufficient for a family of four. As she showcased on her whiteboard, with no opportunity of OT and after taxes, she would bring home $3848 every month. Her bills without assistance, as she would not qualify for that after $60k, will be $3820. It will leave her with only 28 in savings. It would be very irresponsible of her to only depend on such small savings when planning a future.

Later, she showcased the picture with assistance and no promotion. Currently, she is taking home $35,000, which qualifies her for support from the government. According to her calculations, in this case, she is taking $2320. The aid considerably reduces healthcare, rent, and daycare costs, which results in a bill amounting to $2075. This results in $245 in savings. The mother, like her viewers, was shocked.

The calculations clearly indicated that she could not take the promotion. Even though she wants to progress in her job and garner more opportunities, she can't because of her responsibilities. She ended the video by giving viewers a look at how so many people are living in the country. She shares, "This is the reality of a lot of people, and it's so sickening." People cannot make themselves better because the circumstances and forces of capitalism do not allow them to take that leap.

The mother felt some heat from people who believed she shouldn't take government assistance. She answered back in a follow-up video, "Nobody wants to stay in the system." The only reason she was in that situation was because she got laid off last year and almost became homeless. At that point, she took the aid, and even though now she has a job, she cannot be careless and leave this aid when she has the responsibility of three children. She needs to be prepared for any situation and does not have time for silly naysayers.
