He found the lottery ticket while moving his mom's furniture.
Deep cleaning — perhaps the only time we willingly dive into the clutter and somehow find everything we have been searching for over a long period of time. Those missing pair of socks, countless hair ties, or the expensive earbuds — everything you gave up hope on ever finding suddenly appears in front of your eyes. That's exactly what happened to a mother-son duo from Maryland, giving 'found treasure' a whole new meaning. The man was at his mother's place, trying to move some furniture, when he stumbled upon a bunch of lottery tickets. As per the New York Post's report, the scratch-off tickets were bought by his mother as gifts for her children.
Months later, when the man found them, he asked his mother if he could get started on the scratch-offs. She immediately agreed, but had just one condition — they would split the jackpot money that might come their way. The man was okay with his mother's demand and later scratched the tickets off with his wife. At first, they figured that out of the five lottery tickets, only three had small prize money — $6, $15, and a $5 Holiday Luck Doubler. Interestingly, however, the Luck Doubler changed their fate. With 15 chances to win per ticket, it was a steal deal at a mere cost of $5. Upon calculating their win on this ticket, they ended up with an impressive prize of $50,000. While talking about their shocked reactions, the wife remembers asking, "Did that really just happen?"
Initially, both of them thought it was some ridiculous prank and hence called his mom to ask about it. Further, when they inquired at the lottery headquarters, it was confirmed that they had actually won a life-changing lottery. As promised, the man shared the prize money evenly with his mother, going on to reveal that his mother would be getting richer since he'd use the money to pay off some of his debts to her, using whatever is left to invest in a house. "So, she’ll actually end up getting more," the man joked. On the other hand, his mother decided to share her prize money with her other children.
In a similar story, Tayeb Souami, a struggling accountant, won a whopping $135 jackpot after his wife asked him to return a carton of orange juice to a nearby shop. Souami had just refinanced his house to cover his children's education, and so his wife wanted to keep expenses low. When he came back home with the $5 carton of juice, Souami's wife immediately asked him to return and find something cheaper. It was only when the man returned to the local shop, he noticed a Powerball jackpot sign and decided to buy two tickets. As per a report by CBS New York, the next day, Souami decided to scan the lottery tickets. The first one wasn't a winner, but when he scanned the other ticket, it showed, "Must be seen by the retailer."
While Souami couldn't understand what it meant, a woman at the counter shouted, "Oh my God! Oh my God!" and then told him he had won "big, very big." Soon, the man discovered that he had won a staggering amount of money. "It was a very emotional day for me," Souami shared. Further, speaking at a press conference, the father of two revealed that he would prioritize using the money towards his children's education.
