Kassidy was glad she caught her daughter reassuring her on camera

Children may not fully understand death or grief, but they can understand when something is wrong. Kassidy (@mama.kass27), a mother and content creator, took to TikTok on July 7, 2026, to share a clip of her daughter comforting her. Kassidy had just lost her grandfather and was sobbing her heart out. Her 4-year-old daughter was by her side, hugging her and trying to console her. Kassidy explained who grandpa was to her, and what her daughter said next broke and healed her heart at the same time. The video has received 30.7 million views, 6.5 million likes, and 56,900 comments so far.
Kassidy had been crying, grieving her grandfather's passing, and her daughter was right next to her, hugging her. She wrote in her caption, "I'm so glad I caught this. I'm so lucky to have her." She explained to her daughter that 'Papa' was like her PawPaw (Kassidy's dad/daughter's grandpa), so her daughter could understand the relationship. When her daughter realized what her grandfather meant to her mother, she began to reassure Kassidy. She tried to calm her down by telling her to take a big breath. She put her tiny hand on her mother's chin and told her, "Breathe out, breathe out, okay?"
@mama.kass27 i love this smart girl.

Her daughter then reassured her by saying, "We can see him in our imagination. We can talk to him. He will talk back to us. We can always see him... just calm down. Everyone knows they can see him in our imagination." Her daughter's simple, but heartfelt words were enough to make Kassidy tear up all over again. While her daughter could not take the pain of losing her grandfather, her innocence and caring nature gave her a small measure of comfort during a difficult time.

People may think that children are not sensitive to other people's feelings, but Professor Sara Konrath shared an update to her 2011 study. It revealed that empathy is increasing among the younger generations since 2008. She said, "Decades of research show that empathy helps to inspire giving and helping. If empathy is increasing over time, then we should expect to see increasing kind behaviors in young people as well."
On another note, a national poll of 531 bereaved children revealed that 47% said they tried not to make things difficult for the person caring for them ever since a family member passed away. A study conducted by Erin C. Tully found that children reacted differently when they saw their mother upset. Some showed sympathy and wanted to help, while others felt personal distress and tried to understand what was happening to calm their own worries. In Kassidy's case, her daughter immediately jumped in to comfort her.

Netizens were impressed and touched by Kassidy's 4-year-old daughter. @zacharyhubbard4 wrote, "I’m sobbing! Your daughter knows her feelings, regulations, empathy all at 100%. You’re an amazing mama!" @kari_rebe added, "I need a therapy appointment with her at her earliest convenience."
