'Until my heart is ready to move them, they’ll stay there,' she said.
A mother recently shared that a pair of shoes in her bathroom hasn’t been moved due to a heartbreaking reason. In a video posted to TikTok, which gained over 701k views and was liked by over 22k viewers, Beth Miller (@bethmiller001) explained that the shoes belong to her daughter, Kate, and that they’ve stayed in the same spot since the day Kate left them there. Speaking to Newsweek, Miller said she remembers that day clearly. "We had spent the day together, taking her to a doctor's appointment, eating lunch, and doing a little shopping," she said.

"Later that night, I went to Bible study. When I returned home, Kate had baked cookies. She asked me if she could visit a friend for a while. She got ready in my bathroom and left her shoes in the corner of the room. They’ve been there ever since," she added. Kate had promised to be home by midnight, but when she didn’t return, Miller texted her. Kate replied that she was leaving her friend’s house and would be home soon, but she never came. Miller later learned she had been in a single-car accident just a mile from their driveway. She was 18.

"I never got to see my beautiful girl again," Miller said, emphasizing that the shoes bring her comfort. "To look at them multiple times a day, and to know that she took them off and left them right there, is, in a way, proof to me that she existed," she said. "They’re a physical object that were hers, almost like she left them there for me. Sometimes, it feels like she left them there so she can always come home."

She described Kate as a kind and determined young woman who excelled in gymnastics and cheerleading and dreamed of traveling the world as a flight attendant. "She was a beautiful girl who never realized how truly amazing she was," Miller said. "Kate had a big heart and always reached out to kids that were going through hard times." Miller began sharing memories of her daughter on TikTok, a platform Kate had introduced her to before she died. "Through TikTok, being able to talk about my grief, I’ve felt so much compassion from a community of people that I don’t even personally know."
@bethmiller001 The only thing that may get a little easier after losing a child, is the ability to not let your mind “go there” as often as it did in the earlier years. You have to keep your mind occupied with other thoughts, or else you would go crazy🥺 #childloss #grief #healing #healingjourney ♬ Eternity - Alex Warren
For Miller, the shoes are a constant reminder of Kate's presence, something that lets her hold on to the memories of her. Researchers say this is common among grieving parents. A paper published in OMEGA – Journal of Death and Dying examined how bereaved parents use physical items as "transitional objects of grief." The study found that almost every parent surveyed kept at least one belonging of their deceased child and that these keepsakes helped maintain a continuing emotional bond.
Miller said she hopes her story helps others understand that grief doesn’t follow rules. "There’s no right or wrong way to grieve," she said. "Right now, Kate’s shoes are where they’re meant to be. They give me a sense of peace and comfort, and until my heart is ready to move them, they’ll stay there." The video hit home for many viewers, who shared similar stories of their own. @lauren_00_ wrote, "My dad was staying with me when he unexpectedly passed. His shoes and hat are right where he left them by the fireplace." @l.ann.i.am added, "My daughter’s trusty dirty white Vans stay by the front door. Even when I moved. Back by the door, they went. Many hugs to you, Mama."
