'My mom has since blocked that boyfriend and doesn't want anything to do with him anymore...'

A man (u/professional-buy669) couldn’t fathom that his mother's help would leave him and his wife frustrated. About a month after they moved to a European country, their mother visited them. That, however, brought a series of challenges. Although his mom was physically present, she was mentally spinning fantasies with her new boyfriend. For several days, he and his wife avoided confrontation but lost their cool when she started cooking in the middle of the night. On September 6, 2026, the man described the episode starting from when they moved into the country to when his lovesick mother left their house, looking back with resentment. The post has received over 1,000 upvotes on Reddit.
My mom thought being a guest meant we had to live by her rules

The author's parents separated when he was only 13. Ever since, he said, his mom has remarried multiple times and has dated quite a few men. "There's always been one strange pattern: whenever a new man appears in her life, everyone else seems to drop to the bottom of her priority list," the man said. For instance, he explained that whenever a man entered her life, she would forget to spend time with her grandson, which she otherwise did on Sundays. "She could go weeks or even months without calling us unless we called her first," he added.
Meanwhile, in early 2026, the man moved to the new country with his wife and kid to start his new life. All they had were three suitcases, not enough money, and his wife’s remote job to pay off the expenses. Since he didn’t have a job yet, his best friend helped them settle into a new apartment, cross the language barrier, and even rent cars for special occasions. They didn’t have the budget for a childcare camp, so when his mom asked to visit and take care of her grandson, he immediately agreed.

However, the couple asked her to avoid booking tickets extremely early or extremely late hours or on weekdays. On the contrary to the request, his mom ended up booking a flight for 1 am in the middle of Monday night. The 250-mile trip from the airport to the house cost them nearly €65–€70 ($76 to $81). The couple picked her up in their friend’s car but wished that she had come by bus, which cost only €5 ($5.82) per person. The problem was fixed; at least this is what they thought. But from the next day, the couple regretted allowing the mom into their house. She was physically present but mentally elsewhere. During dinners and family conversations, she would suddenly detach from everyone present and start talking to her boyfriend she was about to meet in Italy.

The couple kept on shrugging off her entitled behavior until one day when they couldn’t take it anymore. She would wake up at 4 am and start cooking in the middle of the night, messing up their sleep. When they confronted her, she left. This time, they didn’t shoulder the duty of dropping her at the airport. The couple only booked her a bus ticket and left her to reach the airport on her own. The bus might have dropped her midway, because she called to complain that they should have borrowed their friend’s car to drop her. The whole incident left the man cold, and he vowed to keep her at a distance from then on. "My mom has since blocked that boyfriend and doesn't want anything to do with him anymore. She and I still talk, but our relationship has definitely been cooler since that visit," the man concluded.
According to research cited by Maryam Torabian and others, more than 50% of the examined elderly parents reported high levels of conflict with their adult children. Amongst all factors, "parental living arrangements" were the main cause of conflict between them and their parents for 8% of people, as per Relationships Australia. Moreover, more than one-quarter of people reported that the conflict increased over time, just like the author’s case, and one-third reported that the tension decreased. Meanwhile, 21% of women confessed the tension remained the same, with 15% of men agreeing with that.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/OG-Chainhand commented, “Stand your ground. You are not responsible for what has happened. Hopefully your mother will come to understand that she is the one who needs to alter their behavior, and will make amends.” u/AdLiving2291 said, “The woman sounds very difficult. If she visits in the future, tell her all the rules in advance. Or she can’t come.”
