What started as a birthday greeting quickly turned into the same guilt trip Kathleen had left behind years ago.

Going 'no-contact' with one's mother is not a decision taken lightly. Sierra Kathleen (@sierrak) remembered exactly why she did it after her mother reached out following five years of no contact. On June 25, Kathleen revealed that her mother sent her a 'Happy Birthday' wish for her 30th. She never opened the text, and 45 minutes later, a follow-up message reminded her why she and her mother don't talk anymore. The video received 7.8 million views, 764,600 likes, and 12,000 comments.
The moment Kathleen received a message from an unknown number, she knew who it was from. Her mother appeared to have planned the timing carefully and assumed that Kathleen was out for dinner, which was why she texted at 5:27 p.m. Not wanting to ruin the evening with her husband, Kathleen ignored the text. 45 minutes later, her phone buzzed again. Her husband prompted her to read it. The first message was a "sweet" birthday wish, followed by, "I hope your life is everything you dreamt it to be and hope one day you'll decide to communicate with me." The second message, however, struck a very different tone.
Kathleen's mother turned herself into the victim and wrote, "Carrying on the punishment and toxic bullshit is not how you were raised... I don't have anyone, and okay, so that's my fault. I seriously hope you feel like cutting me out completely was worth it." Kathleen blocked her right after reading the message. She then texted her son and said they were abusing her by cutting her out of their lives. She was going to move somewhere so they'll never see her again. She called herself a "terrible mom," and concluded by saying she won't beg for their love anymore. The last sentence of the message read, "I honestly don't know how either of you live with your f------ selves." Kathleen was familiar with this pattern, and it cemented her decision to not communicate with her mother. Instead of trying to repair their relationship, her mother accused Kathleen of being "selfish" and "abusive."
Parents and their kids don't always have the best relationships, but a Harris Poll revealed that almost half of U.S. adults were estranged from at least one family member. 35% of respondents were estranged from a parent or a sibling. That's not all. Out of the majority of people (80%) who are estranged from their relations, 68% cut off personal communication, 58% put a stop to it from their end, while 35% ignored the other person when they reached out. Another 2025 YouGov survey revealed that 16% of the respondents were estranged from their parent, and 10% were estranged from their child. The findings suggest Kathleen's response wasn't unusual. Like many people who remain estranged from a family member, she chose to block further contact rather than reopen communication.

Netizens also saw right through Kathleen's mother with the second message and the one she sent to her son. @kristina_daniell wrote, "Her intention was never to make amends." @funnyhaha123456789111 pointed out, "She didn’t even say sorry anywhere to you guys."
