She says she used to wish she were a dog so she could rest too.
The relationship between a mother and a daughter cannot be explained, only experienced. The bittersweet nature of the equation can sometimes lead you to sip wine together and gossip about your relatives, and other times, fight over your clothing and career choices. However messy the relationship may get, a daughter always circles back to her mum. Catie Borland — who goes by the username @catieborland — posted a video on her Instagram of her mother spending time with her grandmother during her final hours.
The video, shot by Borland, features her mother and grandmother lying on a hospital bed. She writes, “Before my grandma passed away, I captured this moment of her and my mom.” The mother is seen leaning in and talking to the grandmother, expressing how she was an amazing person. “We love you,” Mother says. Grandma immediately questions, “How long have you loved me?” “All my life, 61 years," Mother responds, "You are the best mother I could ever have. All the things we were talking about you on the way over here."
She adds, “You don't judge people, you’re not gossipy. You seek out those who are lonely, hard workers, and confident.” She proceeds with retelling stories that her mother had told her when she was a little girl. “You jumped up and down. You were so excited, and that made me feel so good. You couldn’t wait for me to come. You didn’t even know who I was yet, but you were so excited when you found out you were having a baby. Always made me feel good.”
Reflecting on a childhood memory, she says, “Remember one time you bought me a coat? It was probably out of our budget as a family, but you knew how much I would like it, and you took me and bought me a coat that I liked. Remember one time on your birthday, you had a party for us. You bought all of us kids presents on your birthday.” Grandma replies in her fragile voice, “That’s amazing," with Mother acknowledging, “Yeah, you're amazing.”
She continues, “Dad always described you as firm, fair, and friendly. That’s how you were as a mother... We used to have spring and fall cleaning, we’d work hard, we’d take the blinds down, dust, wash, vacuum them, and wash windows and clean up.” She recalls how her sibling Kerry would get them treats after their mother would send him to High’s Ice Cream while they worked. She reminisces about having big Saint Bernards and how she would look at them resting comfortably on the cool hardwood floor while they had to hustle. She says she used to wish she were a dog so she could rest too. These correlations to her childhood aren't random. The resemblance between infancy and old age is mind-boggling; it almost seems as if life circles back to where it originated!
A study on PubMed by HC Covey states, “Throughout Western history, scholars and writers have characterized old age as a period of a second childhood and childish behavior.” It continues, “The second childhood was also interpreted as a stage of life where the lifecycle returned to its beginning.” This implies that life ends where it begins. Similar to how we depend on other individuals for our needs during infancy, we require emotional, psychological, and physical support from others during old age as well.
After watching the heartfelt video, many people felt moved to tears by their own memories. @braydi expressed, “Your mom is a gem of moms and you are following her footsteps. Love you and her dearly,” while @thehouseshoehostess wrote, “Thank you for allowing us into this special moment.” @sharronrosey commented, “Something so beautiful about daughter talking about how her mom was so excited to have her (as a baby.) And then, now… the same precious daughter is lovingly hand-feeding Mom (kind of like you would a baby.) This is true love and coming ‘full circle.’”
