Bride's sister, Karen, and mother, Mary complained about staying with one of the author's friends because she had 'too many kids'

Wedding planning is already stressful. Adding in family members who question your every decision can make the whole process overwhelming. u/Any_Argument_5295, a 31-year-old bride, wanted a small wedding, but her sister 'Karen' and mother 'Mary' complained about everything she suggested. Their objections made her book a separate $1,000 beach house for a friend. But when she found out where her mother was staying right before the wedding, she retaliated and invited the one person she was told not to. Am I wrong for continuing my wedding planning and festivities despite my mother and sisters feelings?

The author never planned on marrying again, but after being happily engaged for three years, she and her fiancé decided to get married in 2026. The author wanted "a simple, family-oriented ceremony and celebration," a small beach wedding followed by a buffet dinner. She rented a huge beach house to accommodate her guests. The couple was going to cover everyone's travel expenses and food for four days. She wanted to give her friends the luxury of a mini vacation because she grew up poor and knew what it was like to struggle financially. That was what sparked the disagreements.

Karen kept reminding the author that her friends' finances were not her "burden to bear." She was annoyed when the author wanted to pay for the flower girls' dresses, hair, and makeup. She also criticized the author for wanting to do everyone's hair instead of hiring a stylist. Because of the hair squabble, she did not attend the bachelorette party, even though she was the bridesmaid. This led Mary to pull the author's younger sister from being a flower girl, and Karen backed down from being the only bridesmaid. Mary also said she was doubtful she could attend the wedding because of her diabetic cat, and if she did, she would find her own accommodation.

Before this drama, Karen and Mary complained about staying in the same house with one of the author's friends because she had "too many kids." The author had to rent her friend an extra beach house that cost her $1,000. But right after, Karen got herself a different house because she "needed space." Then the author found out Mary had planned to stay with Karen all along and never informed her.
She was furious they wasted her money when they never planned to stay at the beach house anyway. Mary even barred the author from inviting her father because "she refused to stay in the same beach house as him and his daughters." Feeling petty, she decided to invite him to the wedding and continued to plan her wedding the way she wanted to.

The married couple is supposed to be the center of the wedding. Ultimately, their special day should reflect what they want. However, that is not always the case. Friends and family sometimes pressure the couple to include their suggestions. A Talker Research survey on behalf of JJ's House found that 31% of married couples felt the pressure from family to include certain traditions or customs even if they personally don't believe in them.

Readers were on the author's side after hearing how her sister and mother wanted things to be done their way. u/Alberta2025 commented, "I’m older and probably meaner. Mary and Karen are horrible and are determined to ruin your wedding. Cancel their invitations and their accommodations. But invite me! I want to attend your sweet and fun wedding!" u/carepassqueen25 added, "Good for you! Plan it how you want. They are excluding themselves. They are just spoiled brats who think everything has to be about who has more money. Sounds like you care about people. Glad you asked Dad. NTA by a long shot. They are."
