With technology, we can talk to people living in the farthest place from where we are, as long as both people have internet and a laptop or smartphone. However, even when millennials and Gen Z can seemingly pick anyone they would want to be friends with, they are also increasingly isolated and lonely. 30-year-old Grace—who goes by @ggraceb6 on TikTok—shared how she has very few friends in her city. On top of that, most of them are work friends. Many people echoed her sentiment and agreed that it has become difficult to find friends as an adult.

When she shared her story, the woman got much love and support from her community. She decided to organize some form of meetup so people could make new friends. “To see the overwhelming amount of you that feel exactly like me with not having friends. It feels nice to not feel alone,” the paramedic shared. She added that it's sad that so many people are in the same boat as hers. “I didn’t know how to make friends in the wider community,” the woman told News AU.

“I have always been a bit of an anxious person, so I wasn’t confident to go out and make friends in the wild, and there wasn’t a lot of resources I could find online at the time," Grace expressed. She acknowledged how everything around us is impacting young people and their social lives. “People are working from home a lot more, not going out to socialize as much and this makes it really hard to meet people. I feel like most of my interactions with people are through a screen, which can feel isolating,” the 30-year-old pointed out.

Several people wanted to be friends with her and could relate to her situation. @phbdwstt wrote, "Girl I’m in southeast Melbourne and we are a similar age and in the same boat! I’d love to come and make some friends." @bondi.candle.co commented, "I'd love to meet too! I’m in the eastern suburbs. Work full time in economics & make candles as a hobby. Would love to make some friends. Let’s do it!" @courtneyelicec shared, "I’m so sad I don’t live in Melbourne anymore. I would have loved to be friends with you guys."

@graceb6 Replying to @Rach | Wedding Photographer ALRIGHT NEW FRIENDS, LET’S MAKE THIS HAPPEN!! ❤️ I want to meet you all, please give me ideas on how we should go about this, but I am so excited to create a welcoming environment so we can all make friends!! #friendships #wholesome #connections #fyp #foryou ♬ original sound - grace 🦋

Sharing some background to her previous video, in another video the woman shared how she doesn't have many friends outside her profession. The Melbourne resident explained how she had been talking to a girl at a retail store called "Forever New" and how they had beautiful interactions about dates, events and so on. "I think I wanna ask her to be friends," the woman admitted. "Because I don't have a lot of friends in Melbourne." The woman is a paramedic, so the friends she does have are from that profession and she needs friends outside of that. "I think I am gonna ask her if she wants to get a coffee or something. Is that weird?" she asked.

“I asked this girl to be my friend. I felt so awkward, I felt like I was asking someone out on a date, and I was so scared of being rejected,” the woman told the outlet. “I said I actually need friends, and I was wondering if you’d like to meet for coffee sometime. And she was like, yes, I need girlfriends too!” Grace said explaining how it went. She has understood that making friends has become all about putting yourself out there and taking the leap of faith.
