'All people do is complain,' she remarked.

For the longest time, we’ve heard about HOAs penalizing and torturing residents. There is no doubt that there is an unfortunately great number who turn the focus away from the community to other motives. But have you ever wondered what it’s like to deal with resident complaints day in and out? For those who are dutifully doing their jobs, it can become quite a task. Actor Mila Kunis revealed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on December 1, that she is the head of the HOA in her neighborhood. Anytime residents have issues, minor to serious, she’s the person they contact, and the actor had only one complaint she had from them. It’s fair and noteworthy.

According to Realtor.com, Kunis took up the role because no one else was willing to step up. And she soon realized why. The “Friends With Benefits” Actor opened up about her role as the head of the HOA. When asked about one hobby that would surprise people, she said, “I don’t know if this is a hobby, but I’m the head of the homeowners' association in our neighborhood. I take the complaints. If you have a complaint about someone’s trash or if you have a noise complaint, you complain to me.” Appearing on the TODAY show, Kunis noted what it’s like to take on the responsibilities of so many. “All people do is complain,” she remarked, adding that she gets complaints all day, and it often gets frustrating.

Kunis went on to explain that though she handles only eight houses, the burdens often get real, and it must be so much more taxing for other HOAs. When she appeared on the show, she decided to voice the only complaint she has from her residents — lack of gratitude. “No one ever goes, ‘You know what? Thank you so much,' for anything, ever,” Kunis complained. She added that she had to text her friend who lived in the neighborhood to reply with a “Thanks” or some acknowledgment to her email. The idea was to subconsciously encourage other residents to practice a little gratitude. “No one acknowledges emails,” she said.

Juggling that role with her reputation as an actor often met with different reactions. The “Ted” actor recounted how different people embrace the idea that they’re complaining or talking to her about such issues differently. “They’re desensitized—it is L.A. The funnier part is when I have to call someone to look at the road because it is eroding or something, and then they show up and start laughing. I’m like, ‘I know this is ridiculous, but please, can you give me a quote on this?’” she remarked. So while she does her job to her best, all she’s saying is that a “Thank you” would be nice. And not just for her but all HOAs, at least the ones who actually care and try to make things work.

According to Cinch Home Services, HOAs receive hundreds of complaints in a year. The data from 2022 revealed there were 950 complaints to the HOA about only parking. California and Florida bagged the top two ranks of having the most HOA complaints. Definitely not an easy job. Sharing a public message, Kunis said, “As head of the HOA, I would like to thank all HOA members, presidents, because no one ever says thank you!” @d.burt said, “As the president of my HOA, I co-sign this! More gratitude, fewer complaints.” @sbonot added, “As the HOA president who just had my annual owners meeting on Saturday, while extremely hungover. Thank you.”
