Some family members can get a bit too excited when planning a wedding. For a woman (u/sunsetso), her future mother-in-law seemed to have taken over her wedding. Things got so out of control that she had to remind her four times that it was not her wedding or event to plan, but the MIL refused to listen. In fact, her partner's mom handed over a guest list and suggested food items she wanted on the menu. But wait, that's not it. The mother-in-law also recommended games that would make the celebration feel more carnival than an actual wedding. The post was shared on September 9, 2026, and it has over 7,000 upvotes on Reddit.
When MIL took over
The bride wished for a small courthouse wedding. But luckily, they found a "cute personal venue with a gazebo for the ceremony and a pavilion with 9 tables and grills," so the couple decided to arrange cookout food. However, the bride's future mother-in-law had other plans. She gave the author a list suggesting food items such as grilled cheese, tomato soup, slider burgers, bread and butter, and a charcuterie board. She even added bacon and a taco bar. Moreover, she suggested games for guests to play. The MIL listed cornhole, Jenga, bob for apples, a costume party, a piñata, coloring for kids and adults, prize games, and more. She even mentioned pot gummies and a circled scavenger hunt, making it seem like a priority.
The 'nonstop' intrusion
The bride was tired of reminding her future mother-in-law that it was her wedding to plan. Her fiancé already made it clear to his mother, but instead of being understanding, she victimized herself. The bride found her future mother-in-law's lists ridiculous because she and her future husband would have to pay for everything. In one of the lists, her future mother-in-law wrote down items they should bring to the venue. It included canopies, chairs, bathroom items such as toilet paper, soap, towels, pumpkins for decor, umbrellas, sweaters, jackets, and even dogs and crockpots. The bride added, "While some of these ideas are good and fun, I posted because this has been nonstop... Every day she's giving me rules and giving me sh*t for not cutting cake, walking down the aisle, picking out wedding flowers, etc."
Wedding blues
The days leading up to the wedding are stressful for the bride, groom, and their families. A Zola survey found that 96% of couples feel wedding planning is stressful. Out of these, 40% confessed it was "extremely stressful." Similarly, 35% of couples feel planning is the most stressful wedding task. Given this stress, the author's mother-in-law added to it by pushing her list and making the author feel she was planning her wedding the wrong way.
