Bride stored her wedding dress at MIL's house — a day before the wedding, she found it in a trash bag and her $200 jacket was missing

Her MIL moved the wedding dress into a trash bag and the $200 jacket stored with it disappeared. When the bride asked for an apology, the family called her horrible.

A wedding dress is usually one of the most carefully protected items in the run-up to a wedding. But one bride was stunned to find her gown balled up inside a trash bag just one day before her big day — and then discovered that a $200 jacket that had been stored with it was missing. The bride, u/JHoot2022, had kept her wedding dress at her in-laws' house so her fiancé wouldn't see it before the wedding. When she went to collect it, she found that her mother-in-law had taken it out of its garment bag. The bride shared the experience in a July 21 Reddit post, saying her MIL refused to apologize for the missing jacket or the way she had handled the dress. It has since received 1,200 upvotes and 147 comments.

Missing piece

The bride stored her wedding dress in a garment bag. But a day before the wedding, she found it in a trash bag. When she asked her MIL, she said that "she moved it because obviously a trash bag was better [safer] to transport it in." Additionally, her garment bag was used to store her father-in-law's suit. The bride kept calm, went to a friend's house, and steamed her dress to get rid of the wrinkles. But when she noticed her jacket missing, she started asking questions. "They said they moved it the Thursday before my wedding, and my jacket wasn't in my garment bag," she wrote. But when she asked why they did not tell her it was missing, they got defensive and said, "The wedding is over, so I need to let it go."

Silent reception

Despite the situation, the bride said she never lost her temper and instead focused on finding a solution before the wedding. But she said the situation became even more uncomfortable during the reception, when her husband's family allegedly refused to speak to her and called her “horrible” for asking her MIL to apologize. The bride also mentioned that she had a great relationship with her MIL until 10 days before the wedding. She explained, "My husband told her no on her wanting her entire family at our rehearsal, and she lost her frickin' mind. She's treated me progressively worse since." The bride later said she no longer wanted anything to do with her husband's family. Her husband, however, has reportedly backed her and confronted his mother about what happened.

When family boundaries get complicated

Relationships with in-laws can be rocky. Psychologist and author Terri Apter wrote in her book 'What Do You Want from Me?: Learning to Get Along with In-Laws' that Terri Apter found that 60% of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships in her study were described as tense, compared with 15% of mother-in-law and son-in-law relationships. Her study shared that the former was described as "strained," "depressing," "draining," "uncomfortable," and "simply awful." Another study by Jessica D Ayers, Jaimie Krems, Nicole Hess, and C. Athen Aktipis found that both American men and women reported more conflicts with their mothers-in-law than with their own mothers, and mothers-in-law reported more clashes with daughters-in-law than with their daughters.

MIL ruined it

Netizens wanted to know how her husband reacted to his mother's refusal to answer his wife's question. They were also convinced that the MIL did it. u/_gadget_girl commented, "I would sweetly look at MIL and let her know that you got the message, and it’s fine if she wants to keep pretending she didn’t do it on purpose, but you both know it isn’t true. You, on the other hand, can also be petty and will make every effort to return the favor when it comes to grandchildren and holidays." u/morkshlork chimed in, "No sign of an apology because it was intentional. She is not sorry."
