When her fiancé confronted his mother about this, she insisted that it was 'beige' and he needed glasses

What’s in a color? That’s what a mother-in-law indiscreetly told the bride while remaining insistent on wearing an off-white dress in her son’s civil ceremony. It was the kind of dress that the bride was supposed to don at her wedding. But the mother-in-law kept on promoting it as beige, all the while influencing her to skip the color white. In a July 20, 2026 Reddit post, the bride (u/Direct_Local_6094) recalled how she was left short of words when her mother-in-law presented this argument. Even her own son thought it was “weird” but was just as dumbfounded as the bride. Her post has since garnered 1,300 upvotes.
My Mother-in-law wants to wear a "beige" dress to my mariage ceremony while telling me I don't need a white dress??

The dress looked perfect for a prospective bride, with its whitish color and a perfect lace pattern. But instead of suggesting it for the bride, the mother-in-law picked up the dress for herself and attempted to prevent the bride from wearing white at her own wedding. When her fiancé confronted his mother about this, she insisted that it was “beige” and he needed glasses. She kept on sending pictures of dresses to the bride, as if trying her best to make the bride opt out of the white color.

According to a September 26 update, the bride stood her ground and indeed bought a white dress. The wedding was a blast. The couple had planned a romantic dinner alone after their city hall ceremony. According to the bride, her mother-in-law refused to attend because she wasn’t included. "My MIL and FIL actually did NOT show up because my MIL didn't like that we wanted a romantic dinner alone on our wedding day," the bride recalled. This happened even though the couple offered to have lunch or dinner with her the next day.

As seen in the above scenario, the problem started with a color and soon escalated to dinner and other things. A 2022 U.S. study of family relationships found that participants reported more conflict with their mothers-in-law than with their own mothers. The study can’t explain this family’s dispute, but the bride’s update makes clear that the disagreement had grown beyond the color of a dress: the couple wanted one dinner alone, and his parents missed the ceremony.

None of the suggestions look age- or style-appropriate. MIL was trying to throw a burlap sack over the bride.” u/Agoraphobe961 said, “So maybe it’s just me, but did it come off as petty that all of the dresses the MIL sent were plus sized while OOP looks petite?”
