MIL rejected every wedding idea of hers and then showed wearing bridal white — her response was so perfectly petty she still brings it up years later

Every guest has the right to wear the dress of their choice to a wedding, unless the couple has already decided on a theme. However, there are unspoken and obvious wedding etiquettes. For instance, the guest can’t wear pajamas, bathroom slippers, or white to a wedding. In a Reddit post, a 32-year-old woman (u/[deleted]) recalled an instance from her wedding seven years ago, when her mother-in-law (MIL) showed up wearing a white gown, a serious breach of wedding etiquette. Thanks to the support of her husband and bridesmaids, she pulled off a revenge so petty that the MIL still wasn't over it.

When nit-picking  hurts

Shared on December 19, 2024, the post resonated with many. From the very beginning, the woman experienced friction in her relationship with her MIL, "Linda." From her career to her looks and even her cooking, her MIL criticized everything about her. Her husband often tried to be the peacemaker, but his intentions didn’t help her much in avoiding tussles with his mother. When her wedding planning was in process, Linda's antics shifted into high gear, and she tried to “hijack” every plan. According to her, there were flaws in everything, including the cake, the flower arrangement, and the dress theme for the bridesmaids, even though they loved it.

Audacity of the white

A month before the marriage, her MIL came up with a white gown that she was deciding to wear on the marriage, "not cream, not off-white," but pure white. When she and her husband tried to convince her that it wasn’t the right choice, she agreed to change the dress. On the day of the wedding, however, she flipped and appeared wearing the same white wedding gown, complete with lace usually reserved for the bride.

The guests were clearly taken aback. That's when the bride devised a plan. "I pulled my photographer aside and asked them to take *extra* pictures of Linda throughout the day," she wrote. She asked her to make a special section in the album titled “[MIL’s name]’s Big Day.” Later, she gave her this as a thank-you gift.

Petty revenge for magnanimous betrayal

Besides, while making the speeches, the woman and her bridesmaids made several sarcastic comments without directly humiliating her. Her husband also told Linda that she had embarrassed herself and everyone by wearing white, and he was feeling like cutting her off from his life, as she mentioned in an update.

While the guests giggled and laughed, her MIL had no choice but to shut her mouth and remain silent during the rest of the wedding. She obviously got furious, and to this day, she still complains that she embarrassed her “on purpose” and that she should have communicated with her directly rather than “playing games.”

Can wedding guests wear white?

While everyone has the choice of customizing their wedding fashion, white is a color strictly reserved for the bride, as VOGUE states. Bridal stylist Anny Choi explained that wearing white implies that the guest is trying to steal the attention from the bride and groom on their special day.

"When you're a guest at a wedding, the most important thing to keep in mind is not to upstage or upset the bride," wedding dress designer Madeline Gardner told The Knot, and added, "It's safe to stay away from any outfits that are predominantly white, cream or ivory.” According to the 2018 Brides American Wedding Study, 83% to 92% of brides prefer wearing the traditional white or off-white dress on their wedding, a color that is believed to be exclusive to them on their big day.

'Killed her with kindness'

Reddit readers praised the fact that the bride and her bridesmaids killed the MIL’s entitled behavior with kindness rather than by directly targeting her with embarrassing remarks. u/JustAnotherLurker95 said, “I agree with others that she’s just mad you didn’t give her the reaction she wanted. You killed her with kindness, giving her all the attention she apparently wanted. Bravo!” u/Impossible_balance11 remarked, “This is the very best handling of this situation I've ever heard!”
