She wanted to stop her in-laws' monthly allowance, but her husband refused

Some people fail to see the sacrifices others make for them. Sadly, a woman (u/throwraundertheradar),42, realized the profound truth only after 15 years of marriage. She and her husband had been financially supporting his parents after their retirement. Besides necessities, they also funded their vacations. But things changed when her MIL showed up at her sick mom's house after being told no, and later accused her of lying about her sister's cancer treatment. Frustrated, the author wished to stop funding her in-laws, but her husband stood firm on the monthly allowance. The post was shared on September 30, 2026.
AITA for asking my husband to reconsider financially supporting his parents after a major family conflict?

For well over a decade, the woman and her husband quietly shouldered the financial burdens of his aging parents. Without being asked, they stepped in to provide a reliable monthly stipend, clearing unexpected medical bills and groceries. The couple even took them on trips to Europe. "We've always been happy to help," she explained. But the situation changed when her mother-in-law did something unexpected.

Her 74-year-old mother-in-law was visiting the area where her family lived and insisted on meeting her mom. Despite receiving clear warnings that it was not a good time due to her poor health, she ignored every boundary. The MIL pestered her family members, tracked down their location, and prowled through the neighborhood until she met the author's mom. "Afterward, my MIL called my husband crying and said my family had lied to her and treated her disrespectfully," she recounted. As it turns out, the mother-in-law had completely twisted the narrative into an intentional snub.

From that point onwards, things escalated quickly. Soon the word spread across the family, with the woman's brother-in-law launching a vicious verbal attack at her and her family. Meanwhile, the father-in-law also accused them of lying to his wife. Despite the woman revealing to them what was actually happening, including the details of her sister's cancer treatment, they didn't stop. In fact, her in-laws accused her family of "making it up." Frustrated, the woman decided to stop funding her in-laws, but her husband refused. "My husband promised his parents that their monthly allowance would never stop. He feels strongly that he needs to keep that promise regardless of what happened," she explained.
Similar to this woman's husband, most Americans believe providing financial assistance to an aging parent is right. In fact, a Pew Research survey found that 75% of adults supported the idea, while only 23% disagreed. Interestingly, young people were more likely to support it, with 81% believing it's their job to provide financially to their parents.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/Alternative-Treacle1 commented, "NTA. They said they were done with you, and that means your money. Evidently, others have taken their side, so I assume they will be supporting the parents." At the same time, u/cooking_mama_12 pointed out, "They didn’t plan for their future financially, and then didn’t think or plan ahead again when they burned bridges with you and your family. So as to say they are 'done with you.' If they are done with you, then they are done with the money that comes from the relationship you’ve had with them."
