After the unexpected move left many bewildered, the veteran actress came forward to explain the heartwarming thought behind her actions.
The 96th Academy Awards was a glitzy and glamorous affair as always. However, the prestigious award show presented some of the biggest awards of the night in an unusual style. The past winners of the Best Actress Oscar lined up on the Dolby Theatre stage to present this year's winner with the trophy. According to Good Morning America, Michelle Yeoh—who bagged the award in 2023—contributed to a little confusion among viewers while presenting the award to Emma Stone for her incredible performance in "Poor Things."
However, the "Everything Everywhere All at Once" actress took to her Instagram later to clear up the mixup when she handed the award to Jennifer Lawrence right when Stone climbed the stage to accept her Oscar. "Congratulations, Emma! I confused you, but I wanted to share that glorious moment of handing over Oscar to you together with your best friend, Jennifer!" Yeoh wrote on her Instagram post. "She reminded me of my Bae Jamie Lee Curtis. Always there for each other," she added. Yeoh also shared three photographs from the night; one of her hugging Stone, another featuring herself with Lawrence and Stone on stage and a third of the trio alongside other past winners of the award.

Yeoh's sweet explanation makes sense since she and Curtis both won for their performances in "Everything Everywhere All at Once" last year and they have developed a tight friendship since working on the project. Besides Lawrence, Yeoh was accompanied by Oscar-winning actresses Sally Field, Charlize Theron and Jessica Lange on stage to present this year's best actress Oscar. This is Stone's second Academy Award for Best Actress in her career after she won for her performance in "La La Land" in 2017 for her portrayal of an aspiring actress named Mia who was torn between her relationship and career.
Stone walked up to the stage this year for her outstanding performance as Bella Baxter, a woman who is revived from the dead by an unorthodox scientist in director Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things." In her acceptance speech, Stone tearfully thanked her fellow Best Actress nominees of the night like Sandra Hüller, Annette Bening, Carey Mulligan and Lily Gladstone. "I share this with you," Stone said. "I'm in awe of you. It's been such an honor to do all of this together. I hope we get to keep doing more together." She also thanked Lanthimos for "giving her the gift of a lifetime in her character Bella Baxter" and concluded her speech by thanking her family and her daughter, who is about to turn three.
Stone gracefully tackled a minor wardrobe glitch onstage with a dash of humor before her speech. She revealed that the zipper on her dress had broken, leaving the corset-style bodice gaping in the back. "Oh boy. Um, my dress is broken," Stone said while addressing the audience and turned around to show the outfit mishap. "I think it happened during 'I'm Just Ken.' I'm pretty sure," she joked. The highlight of her speech was possibly the inclusion of Taylor Swift's song lyrics at the end. "I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl," she said in her message to her toddler, referencing the lines from Swift's "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" from her 2022 deluxe album "Midnights" (3 am Edition).
