'I don’t take it as an attack, there will be those who think...,' she said

Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of sexual harassment that some readers may find distressing.
Time and time again, poets and artists have described the jewel-like beauty of a woman. However, an argument arises when innocent appreciation of feminine beauty turns into sexual objectification. One such uproar stirred recently after Mexico’s former mayor, Sandra Cuevas (@SandraCuevas_), posted a video of herself enjoying the FIFA World Cup on June 12, 2026. As soon as her video went viral (with over 1 million views on X), people started commenting on her outfit, calling her out for her inappropriate choice of clothing for a public event. However, instead of hiding, Cuevas decided to stand up to the online bullies.

Mexico had defeated both South Korea and South Africa, and the 40-year-old Cuevas had joined the street celebrations to enjoy the tournament success with fans and other supporters of El Tri, the country's national football team. However, things took a turn for the worse when viewers started making sexualized remarks while watching her dressed in a deep-neck white top with a pair of denim.
Cuevas, who served as the mayor of the Mexico City borough of Cuauhtemoc between October 2021 and March 2024, was even compared to the iconic supermodel Mar Castro, who came into the spotlight during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and was dubbed “La Chiquitibum.” After all these comments rained down on her tweet, viewers were left dumbfounded after Cuevas refused to back down and instead faced them with bold arguments. “La Chiquitibum… well, guys, what can I do, I can’t just take them off,” she said, per The Sun, and added, "I don’t take it as an attack, there will be those who think that way and take it in a derogatory way, but that’s how we Mexicans are.”

While Cuevas could get back at her trolls with a fierce attitude, not everyone can. In fact, according to the Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential, 80% of women worldwide have experienced sexual harassment in public spaces. It may sound shocking, but 45% of women avoid public spaces alone after dark due to fear of harassment. Similarly, a survey of 811 females by Stop Street Harassment's national report revealed that over 87% of women said they were the target of a sexist comment, and nearly half (45%) said they’ve experienced it in public at least 25 times in their lives. Nearly 81% females reported becoming the target of sexually explicit comments from unknown men in public at least once.
Meanwhile, comments under Cuevas' video ranged from sexualized commentary to political attacks. For instance, @7marqko0 commented, “Even Messi doesn't have those golden balls.” Another person, who goes by @leonard17072356, said, "This b**ch should be in jail, and the wankers who defend her are pathetic; they're definitely going to listen to you filthy losers, because then they come out with stupid-ass arguments like, 'she probably just doesn't like woman,' but it's all good, little wankers."
This one can cross the US Border illegally, we wont send her back
