Man got a message from a vinyl collector about a Stevie Nicks album — and unexpectedly got something he misplaced in 1982

After 43 years, the man was able to go down memory lane thanks to a stranger's observation and thoughtful message.

It’s funny how the smallest things take us back down memory lane and give a nostalgic refreshment. A man named Brinke Gurthie received a message from a total stranger about a vintage Stevie Nicks’ Bella Donna album he owned back when he was a teenager, per Newsweek. However, the person was not texting to tell him about the record but rather an unexpected find he discovered inside it. It was a 43-year-old belonging that left Gurthie reminiscing about the good old days, and somehow, the internet is also in awe. Sharing the tale on Instagram Threads on November 27, the man mentioned that a person contacted him about the vintage vinyl that he recently purchased.

It was promo copy of the 1981 Steve Nicks album Bella Donna. The man was brought in only last month at a pop-up record store in Chapel Hill, NC. Gurthie revealed that he had received this copy decades ago when he worked in Cincinnati radio at Q102-FM between 1980 and 1993. He used to get promo copies all the time. That record remained hidden for over four decades until it was put on show during a recent record event. But this stranger was not contacting him about the vinyl record itself; he was contacting him about what was inside it. A University of Cincinnati report card from the spring quarter of 1982.

The message Gurthie received read, "Hey, so random question for you. Were you by chance attending the University of Cincinnati in the spring of '82?” The purchaser went on to reveal that he had got the record for his sister’s birthday. He added the details of the record, where he got it, as well as the report inside, and also shared a sweet note. “Congrats on the dean's list by the way,” he wrote. The grade card did belong to Gurthie, from over 40 years ago, when he was just a teenage student, with straight As and Bs. “For some reason, I stuck my report card inside. I have no idea why,” the man remarked.

The duo got in touch, and the stranger was delighted to mail the item back to its original owner. Gurthie didn’t want the record, just the card that reminded him of his good old days. When he received it, he was stunned to see it was in perfect condition, “as if it were printed yesterday.” “Not a crease, crinkle, or smudge. 43 years,” he remarked. Several fellow Cincinnati alumni commented, and others shared the unique places they kept their report cards. But the story did its perfect job in taking the now working adults, parents, or grandparents, even, to their golden days.

@kaypeep7 wrote, “I recently found my own college diploma tucked inside an autographed copy of Depeche Mode Music for the Masses that I won from WDRE in 1992.” @thethingsicarried revealed, “Love that!! Mine, for some reason, was in a Scrabble game box for years. Guess my mom needed the paper to keep score.” @kim.zimm added, “What a great thing for him to do! What a thrill, to get something like that back from a perfect stranger.” @jtron74 remarked, “Heyyy! I recognize that type of UC report card! I have a few very similar ones around somewhere. Mine didn’t start until ‘83, though. Nice find!”
