Man insisted the waiter give him complete privacy on his first date. It backfired when his date walked out, blaming him for the poor service

He thought he was doing himself a favor with a strange demand, but it backfired

They say you get exactly what you ask for, and one man recently experienced it firsthand on a first date. At a high-end restaurant, he repeatedly instructed the server not to disturb him. The server (u/creepingdemon) followed his instructions and gave him privacy. However, it backfired when his date — oblivious to his request — complained about the poor service. The post, shared on August 22, 2026, has received 11,000 upvotes on Reddit.

The strict warning

Even before his date arrived, the man warned the waiter not to disturb him the entire night. "Hey, just so you know, this is our first date, and we aren't going to want to be bothered," he said. Later, when the server approached him for drinks, he doubled down on his strange condition, reminding them once again that he wanted complete privacy. So the server obliged, assuring him they would keep their distance but suggesting they'd be available for assistance.

The dynamic grew visibly strained the moment his date joined him and tried to engage with the server for suggestions. When she began asking detailed questions about the curated cocktail list and wine pairings, the man became visibly annoyed. Eager to cut off any hospitality, he shut them down and refused conversation with the server. "I drop her drink, and when I ask if they are ready to hear the features, he quickly says no," the author recalled

Using hand gestures

Frustrated, the server gave the man the exact silent experience he demanded. Shifting into complete quiet, they delivered the courses, cleared the dirty plates, and checked in using hand gestures instead of talking. The author continued the silent treatment throughout the evening. At the end, however, the waiter asked the man's date if she enjoyed the evening. While she appreciated the food, she complained about the service. "I've heard great things about this place and the service, and I just feel like you didn't really explain the menu or check on us to see if we needed anything," she added.

First date gone wrong

Grabbing the opportunity, the server exposed her date's scheme. They told her that her date had told them not to bother them twice. Hearing the truth, the woman looked at the man with disgust. To make matters worse, the server deliberately left the bill in plain sight so she could see the man had only left a 10% tip. Realizing her companion for the evening was a cheapskate, the woman took matters into her hands, slipping in some cash before leaving in separate cabs.

Well, that's no surprise, given that all of his gestures were what people consider red flags at a date. In fact, according to an OpenTable survey, 79% of Americans think that talking rudely to the waitstaff is a major red flag. Meanwhile, a striking 77% consider bad manners a red flag, with another 67% feeling the same way about complaining about the restaurant. On the other hand, 68% consider leaving a generous tip as a green flag.

'He ruined the date'

Interestingly, netizens in the comments supported the woman for ending the date. For example, u/pinyatashit wrote, "There may have been no wind, but that clown was a bristling red flag." Meanwhile, u/theyellowfringe noted, "I got the impression from OP's story that the date wanted to control the feeling of the meeting and even limit how much she talks to others. It's the only logic I can imagine from him refusing to really have an explanation of the food or drink. The date probably wanted to improvise and give her his own take on the menu or such."
