Red flag in hindsight
The story began one night when Kia and her boyfriend were watching a news segment on an "inheritance dispute." It was basically about a man who had lost all his inheritance to a greedy relative. At this moment, Kia's boyfriend chuckled and said, “Honestly, if my own dad ever got sick or went broke, I’d probably just put him in the cheapest, worst nursing home I could find and forget the address. It’s just survival of the fittest, right?”
He shrugged it off like it was a joke, but for Kia, the room temporarily froze. However, she, too, eventually dismissed his remark. Life continued, and Kia didn't think about it much until her dad suffered a minor stroke, and she realized her partner's cheap mentality.
Mask drops off
Frantic and choked with emotion, Kia was busy managing the medical paperwork when her boyfriend came around and complained that she was “killing the vibe.” He said something that left her stunned. The man casually asked Kia why she was putting so much effort into saving a man who was already on his deathbed. That night, she remembered his old remark and realized he was quite serious about abandoning family in an emergency. Though momentarily, Kia caught a glimpse into the man’s “hollow” and “ruthless” soul.
The following day, Kia packed her bags and left. Her boyfriend ranted that she was being too dramatic. Their mutual friends also supported him and told Kia that she was recklessly ruining a three-year relationship because of a hypothetical remark. But Kia believes that she “threw away a monster before the hypothetical became her reality.”
A growing disconnect
While Kia's boyfriend's attitude may surprise you, sadly, it's a common reality. In a report originally published by the Sutton Trust, the study concluded that among 40% of Americans who lack attachments, 15% tend to avoid their parents, believing it is distressful. Similarly, the Pew Research Center surveyed 8,750 American adults in September 2025 and found that only 1 in 10 adults cares for a parent age 65 or older.
