The entire universe works on the principle of reciprocity; bees drink nectar from flowers and, in turn, help them reproduce by scattering pollen. Likewise, smaller fish eat the parasites off the large fish, and in turn, the large fish spare them by not eating. When this reciprocity unfolds in the human world, it becomes a story that changes the world one heart at a time. In a May 27 post on X, Iván Lezcano (@ivanlezcano030) shared a similar act of kindness that probably changed millions of hearts forever. The heartfelt story has gone viral with over 2 million views on the platform.

An unforgettable tip

Once, when Lezcano was "flat broke," he had tipped a delivery guy only $2. He felt awful about it and apologized to him about five times. Two years later, Lezcano was standing in a queue at the airport while his flight was boarding when he realized his phone battery had almost drained. And that's when someone behind him tapped on his shoulders. When Lezcano turned around, it was the same delivery guy he had helped years ago. "He remembers me. He says, 'You're the one who tipped me when it was raining and you had nothing. Let me grab you a charger,'" the author recalled.

'Now it's my turn'

The delivery guy then purchased a $25 power bank and gave it to Lezcano. When the author offered him money, he immediately refused and said, "Those $2 kept me going that night. Now it's my turn." That profound incident changed how Lezcano looked at life. In fact, he urged, "You never know what small thing someone carries with them for years. Be kind when it costs you something. That's when it really matters."

Reciprocal altruism

The instance that Lezcano experienced is a classic example of altruism being reciprocated. Coined by Robert Trivers, the term "reciprocal altruism" explains how cooperation and prosocial behavior can evolve among strangers or unrelated individuals. A study published in Agricultural and Biological Sciences illustrated this phenomenon with the example of the cleaning symbiosis that small and large fish participate in, as a mutual altruism. Meanwhile, the World Happiness Report also stated that recipients of kind acts paid forward with 278% more kind and prosocial acts compared to those who didn’t experience acts of kindness. Researchers noted that this process of “upstream reciprocity” proves transformative and emotionally healing for both altruists and beneficiaries of altruism, as was the case with Lezcano and the delivery guy.

Karma always finds a way back

Meanwhile, hundreds of viewers flooded the comments section with insightful and inspiring remarks, launching a trail of positivity and wholesomeness in the world. For instance, @enmanuelprezm said, “Sooner or later, everything returns, good or bad — we must do good to the best of our ability without thinking about reward.” Similarly, @seedkneeficient reflected, “It’s interesting how life can circle back and put you in completely reversed positions without warning.”
