A 21-year-old college student thought he was being considerate when he first set out to drop off his girlfriend's forgotten lipstick at her place. However, that very kind gesture accidentally landed him right in the middle of a devastating truth. After reaching his girlfriend’s house, the man realized she had gone out for dinner with "friends." He left her lipstick there and was about to return home when her dad asked him to drive to the restaurant and pick her up. The boyfriend agreed, unaware that he was about to catch her on a date with another man. The heartbreak story was shared by u/huejallo on October 5, 2026, and it has since received 10,000 upvotes on Reddit.

The thoughtful gesture

The couple had been dating since freshman year of college. On a particular Saturday afternoon, the duo were chilling at the author's family home. When his girlfriend left, she accidentally left her lipstick behind. Wanting to be thoughtful, the author drove over to her house after dinner to drop it off. When he arrived, her parents told him that she had gone out to dinner with "friends" and didn’t drive herself. "I'm pretty close with her dad," the author mentioned, adding, "I guess growing up, my own dad wasn't really emotionally present, so it felt nice to have someone like him in my life." Seeing an opportunity to be a helpful partner, her father suggested he drive to the restaurant, and bring her home.

A heartbreaking surprise

Following her dad's advice, the boyfriend drove to the venue and waited in his car for about 15 minutes. Curious, he eventually stepped inside to check on his girlfriend. But what he saw instead shattered him instantly. His girlfriend was sharing a deeply intimate moment with another guy. Devastated, the author walked out of the restaurant and headed back to her residence. "I just didn't have the courage to confront her, so I just drove back to her house crying," he shared. Blaming himself at first, the boyfriend wondered if she got bored because he had been busy focusing on his studies.

An agonizing dilemma

The boyfriend confided in her father, and, surprisingly, he was very supportive of him. "He didn't blame anything on me and said he would ask her clearly about this. He also said that he thought I was a great boyfriend, and she cheated on the wrong person."

The next day, his girlfriend sent a flurry of apologetic texts calling the affair a "mistake." The author explained he's trapped in an agonizing dilemma: he wants to break up, but his deep respect for her father and fear of hurting that paternal bond are making him stay in a broken relationship.

A cheating twist

Most studies across most age groups suggest that men are generally more likely to engage in infidelity, but data from the General Social Survey (GSS) reveals a striking reversal among younger adults. For those aged 18 to 29, women report slightly higher rates of infidelity than men (11% vs. 10%). This gap, however, changed in people from older age groups. In fact, the report found that from ages 30 to 34, men are more likely than women to cheat in relationships.

'You deserve better'

Meanwhile, hundreds of netizens pointed out the absurdity of staying in a broken relationship just to maintain a bond with an ex’s father. For example, u/Cold_Hour commented, "Staying with a cheater because you get along with their dad has got to be one of the worst reasons I've ever heard. Your ex has so little respect for you she left your place early to go on a date, imagine looking her in the eye after that." u/Shurtmurmur, offering a lighthearted perspective, and wrote, "Power move. Break up with her but keep hanging out with her dad. You may have lost a queen (more accurate to call her a pawn) but that doesn’t mean you need to loose a king."
