A father (u/prestigious_brick151) has been tussling with his wife ever since she paid for their entitled son’s new car despite his refusal. When his son, 21, who'd always been reckless with finances, asked for a car, he immediately refused. His wife, however, financed a used Toyota Corolla in her name. The result? Well, the couple soon found themselves drowning in debt after the car was repossessed. Since the car loan was legally in the mother's name, the authorities contacted her to clear the remaining debt. On September 9, 2026, the man shared that the incident has taken a toll on his marriage. The post has received over 4,000 upvotes.

Living on the edge

The author explained that his 21-year-old adult son had always been irresponsible for most of his life. In fact, he mostly failed in school. After graduating, he skipped college and switched seven jobs while living rent-free with his parents. The son never even contributed to household expenses. Having been diagnosed with ADHD, he also refused to take any medications and instead squandered all his money on alcohol, vapes, junk, and tattoos. The couple tried getting him into the military, but he backed out multiple times.

The entitled demand

Over the years, his behavior started affecting the author and his wife. While the father thought their son needed boundaries and to understand consequences, his wife had a soft heart for him. Then the other day, their son requested to borrow some money for his new car. His father refused. However, going against his wish, his wife visited a car showroom and financed a second-hand Toyota Corolla for their son. "I refused to participate. I didn’t sign anything. This was a terrible idea, and I wanted no part of it," the author said

Then one day, their son informed them that the lender had repossessed the car because he failed to make monthly payments. Although they could repossess the car, the loan remained in his mother’s name. Ultimately, the mother learnt a lesson when the finance company showed up at their house and said they were suing her. Luckily, she was able to make the lawsuit drop with a promise of paying $200 per month, a payment even their son could afford but chose not to. Each time the mom asked their son to make the payment, he shrugged her off, saying he had money problems.

The breaking point

Being a dual-income household, these payments were taking a toll on their household expenses. At one point, the author's wife called him to say the company was garnishing her wages and she would need to work harder. It was enough for the man. He blew up. Her wages being garnished meant their household expenses would suffer. He furiously lashed out at her, saying it was her mistake that she protected their son from consequences all his life, and now they were bearing the price. "If my wife insists on paying his debt without requiring anything from him, I think the money needs to come from sacrifices in her discretionary spending or additional income, not from money we need to run our household," the author concluded.

The burden parents carry

Like their son, children’s financial dependency often makes parents’ future vulnerable. This, however, is a sad reality. About half (47%) of American parents with adult children provide them with some financial support, according to research by Savings.com cited by Scripps News. Just like the author's son, nearly 61% of adults do not contribute to household expenses like rent or utilities. This is often a huge financial and emotional strain on the parents, according to a report by AARP. The findings suggest that 42% of parents reported financial stress and 35% reported emotional stress related to supporting their adult children.

'Kick your son out'

Meanwhile, Redditers blamed the mom for raising an irresponsible adult and urged the father to cut off his financial support immediately and get marriage counseling to sort out their relationship. For example, u/BTLAXE commented, “Oh man, you guys created a monster. You need marriage counseling. Hopefully the counselor can help guide you moving forward.” Similarly, u/AdLost2542 said, “You need to kick your son out. Otherwise you'll all be on the street.”
