Despite applying to 1400 jobs, a persistent job seeker remains unemployed so, he shares the challenges of the job market.
Getting a job these days seems to be a truly difficult task. Having all the necessary qualifications and applying to jobs just does not seem to cut it anymore. A man on TikTok, Ohm Patel (@ohmpatel90), recently shared a video where he lamented about the poor situation of the job market. The video has gained 10.1 million views and 23.5K comments on the social media platform. The video is stitched with another user named Amber Loeffler's (@amberloefflerrr) clip where she has shared how she has applied to 100 jobs and still has not got any callbacks.
Patel starts his video and shares how he still had no job even after applying for over 1400 positions through LinkedIn and other popular recruiting websites. In addition to that, he even took the effort to fill out forms that were there on the company websites when they were hiring. He says, "When I tell people this number, they genuinely cannot believe it." Most people began to recommend a book or some tactic to Patel so that he could land a job.
This deeply frustrated him because he had already tried every possible tactic that was available to try and get a job, but none of it had worked. "They do some stupid shit like recommend a book or a seminar to watch about job applying and I am like, 'You think I haven't tried every tactic in the book!'" he says. He remarks on how he has sent "cold emails" and "cold calls" to many companies that have not yielded any success. Patel shares, "It took me six months to get my last job and that was around 700 applications." He adds how he had been lucky because he happened to go to the same school that his recruiter did, which helped him get the job.
Patel concludes his video by revealing how he has been unemployed for six months and has been looking for a job for eight months. Patel's struggle to find a job astounded people and they were curious about what kind of jobs he was applying for. @bringtheparty inquired, "What jobs are you looking for? CEO?" So, he decided to post a follow-up video to provide some clarification on his qualifications and the kind of jobs he was applying for.
He starts the video by saying, "Trust me, I'm not applying to anything that has the word senior in it." Patel further added that he did not want a job that had managerial responsibilities. The man shares how he saw many comments that assumed he had some other red flag in his resume that prevented him from getting a job. He decided to share his resume with his viewers to make it clear that he was qualified and had work experience.
Patel managed to get a degree in biology in 2022 and his resume looked very organized. He went on to reveal how his girlfriend, a Harvard graduate, worked with him to edit his cover letter and resume. Patel says, "Anything job-related that I have to edit goes through her first." His girlfriend edited resumes as a paid service and did it for free for him. The man concluded the video by sharing that he was not "holding out" for a six-figure job but only wanted something that paid him like his previous job and was in his field.
He says, "I'm not shooting for the stars here, I'm trying to get my foot through the door." People provided their suggestions in the comments section. @faithjacquelinee said, "Try making the resume less wordy! Make things pop and stand out!" @el_ciskins pointed out, "For bio, you need way more lab experience than what you had in undergrad. Working for a research lab would have been a great idea."
