The father tried to make peace between his wife and his adult child until he uncovered the truth

Life is not always a fairytale, but for some, it's comparable to Cinderella's story, thanks to an evil stepmother who goes out of her way to make them suffer. A 26-year-old who goes by u/responsible-road-921 shared how their father dismissed their complaints about their stepmom for years, until a video footage confirmed the worst. The post, shared on June 16, has received over 1,000 upvotes on Reddit.
My dad is divorcing his wife of 17 years because she throw my food away and I couldn’t be more happy.

The author revealed that they initially loved their stepmom and forgave her multiple times for her wrongdoings, all because they wanted a mother. However, the rift in their relationship deepened after they turned 18. The stepmom made it clear that she did not want the author and told them to stop treating her like a mom. Even though they were living in the same house, they stopped speaking to each other. This continued until the author was laid off from a full-time job two years ago and returned home to live rent-free with their dad. That was the beginning of the author's nightmare. It started with petty things — the stepmom would use their bath products, hide keys, throw away their food, etc. The author did complain to their dad, but he brushed it off as an accident or blamed their negligence.

In October 2025, the author's dad installed a camera to check on the dogs he and his wife had recently adopted. That was how he finally caught his wife messing with his adult kid. "That camera became my saving grace because it records everything. It had caught her throwing away food that I had just bought into the house," the author wrote. Initially, their father just replaced the items his wife threw away and did not do much about it. However, everything checked out when he checked the camera again and found his wife contaminating the author's food. "The pastrami I bought to make sandwiches, she threw it on the ground and then put it right back into the container and put it in the fridge," they shared.

A few months ago, the author was hospitalized due to severe food poisoning. Her father now suspects his wife was responsible for it. He confronted the stepmother and barred her from returning home. He even changed the locks and started packing her things in boxes. Since then, the author's father had been going through months of footage to see if he could find anything incriminating to use against her in court. "For the first time in years, I feel like I could finally breathe," the author confessed, reflecting on how her relationship with her dad improved after he let go of his wife for good.
While some are lucky, not all stepchildren share an 'excellent' relationship with their step-parents. In fact, a Gallup poll found that 62% of biological parents are more likely to have good relationships with their children compared to 31% of stepparents, 50% of adoptive parents, and 54% of other family members. In the author's case, it was true. But thankfully, her father took a stand for her when he learnt about his wife. The author concluded her post, "I’m sad it took this long, but I’m happy it’s finally happened, and I get to have my dad back," showing that her relationship with her biological parent was stronger than with her stepparent.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit story, u/wisegal99 commented, "Since you got so sick, I almost wonder if she tried to poison you! Yikes." u/wubbabubbadub asked, "Out of curiosity, why did she keep doing it knowing there were cameras? Like, did she not know about them, or did she just not care? That’s the craziest part for me. Happy she’s out of your life now." u/yiyiyiyu said, "Oh, you poor, poor thing. I’m so, so happy for you; this torturous situation has come to an end! Wicked stepmother indeed."
