The author found solid evidence against the new neighbor. His pool was built illegally over a utility easement

There is a unique sense of satisfaction that comes from seeing a neighborhood bully get caught in their trap. For a homeowner (u/mel_melissaa) and their mother, this satisfaction was achieved at a high cost of $40,000, all of which belonged to their neighbor. The person shared the entire incident on Reddit, detailing how they got back at their intrusive neighbor, who was trying to fine them for a totally legal shed in their backyard. The post, shared on April 17, 2025, has received 10,000 upvotes online.
Neighbor tried to get my mom fined over our shed. So I got his $40K pool filled in.

The story began when a new guy moved into the neighborhood. The author lived with their mom, who was very introverted and never bothered anyone. But that changed when the neighbor reported their mom for having an illegal shed in the backyard. The inspector arrived and, after investigation, left without taking any action because the "shed had been there for years, and the homeowner had full permits for it."

Pissed, the author decided to dig in, and surprisingly, found solid evidence against the new neighbor. They found that the man's brand-new pool was much closer to the property line than it should have been, and it was also illegally built over a utility easement. That was more than enough reason for them to report this guy next door. Within weeks, the city issued orders to either remove it or fill it. Of course, moving the pool wasn't an option.

So, this man had to fill up his new pool, making his massive $40,000 go to waste. Now, he has to see his neighbor's shed every day while his pool is no longer in sight. All of this, just because he wanted to assert dominance over his neighbors. If he had stayed quiet, he'd probably still have his pool. Regardless, this type of conflict among neighbors isn't uncommon.
In fact, about 42% of Americans said they have been involved in a dispute with their neighbors, according to a survey by Findlaw.com. Out of these, the most common type of conflict is related to noise, with about 48% of people finding it the most annoying habit. This is followed by issues related to pets and animals (29%), children (21%), a visual nuisance (18%), and lastly, property-related issues (17%). Although a solid 49% of these conflicts are resolved with just a conversation, only about 27% report it to the police.

That said, given that most of the American population has faced similar troubles as the author, they know the feeling all too well and extended their support in the comments. u/vha23 suggested, "You should get a small kiddie pool and put it in your backyard. Fill it and sit in it while staring at his house and drinking a margarita." Meanwhile, u/GreyFoxSolid noted, "I cannot imagine caring at all about what my neighbors do unless it affects my property or life. Starting these petty wars with your neighbors over things that do not matter to you in the least is absolutely a waste of everyone's time."
