Having recently lost his grandmother, the man and his family were mourning her loss but this interesting discovery in the freezer brought smiles.
One thing that many families do after a loved one passes away is sort through their cherished belongings. Sometimes, this can become a soulful experience, a trip down memory lane. From old photographs to timeless recipes, these heirlooms become a cherished reminder of the deceased person. At times, those age-old belongings can turn into useful items that are passed on for generations. When the family of u/hoop-d-lishus on Reddit, was cleaning his grandmother's home after her death, they bumped into something so priceless that he had to share it online.
It was an 84-year-old biscuit! Posting a picture of his Granny's prized possession, he wrote, "Granny's freezer had an 84-year-old biscuit with a note." The biscuit seemed to have a little piece broken from it and with it was a handwritten note. "Biscuit made by Mrs. Dara L Chambers in August 1940 at the Blankenship home," the note read. Finding this heirloom brought smiles to the mourning family instantly. Andy Wiseman, the grandson who posted this, was quite close with his grandmother, who passed away recently after having just turned 90, as per Newsweek.
Wiseman's mom, Linda, was the one who found the biscuit and the note. "She found it during the clean out of his grandma's home. It was one of the last things she found," Wiseman shared. He told the outlet that finding the keepsake became a "moment of levity" amid a stressful situation. The family members were both amused and perplexed about the discovery of this vintage cookie. Moreover, it sparked their intrigue as to what could be the backstory for this biscuit preserved for over eight decades.
Wiseman later learned the truth behind the biscuit from his great aunt, his grandmother's sister. "She indicated it was likely saved by their brother's first wife. It would have been her grandmother's. Perhaps her last batch," Wiseman said. He believed his great-uncle must have loved this biscuit and wanted to save it as a reminder of his mom. The biscuit might have originated in Buckingham County, where his great uncle lived, and later passed onto Staunton in Virginia. So, based on these presumptions, the cookie would be 84 years old and after his great-uncle's death, Wiseman's grandma would have preserved it for another 10 years. The biscuit is now the responsibility of Wiseman's parents. "Let's just hope no one finds it during a nighttime search for an unauthorized midnight snack," he quipped.
The one-of-a-kind heirloom sparked some interesting responses on the platform. "There's something strangely adorable about this. It's like a good luck biscuit," said u/Dangerous_Finger4678. "Someone took a tiny little bite in 1940 to make sure it tasted good. I love that," pointed out u/HumbleDot371. "I had half a loaf of the very best banana bread ever made in my freezer. It was a gift from my then-boyfriend-now-husband's grandmother to me shortly before she died. I had a small slice once in a while to remind me of her after she died. There was just a little bit left, that was about 20 years old when someone else threw it out," chimed in u/TheRabidBadger.
