'Bro had us in the first half, the second half, the third half!'
Life is full of many unpredictable moments — some we create ourselves, and some life throws at us. Despite their positive or negative nature, these sudden events have an eternal imprint on our souls and tend to change our brain chemistry. Something similar happened with a woman attending a stand-up comedy show with her boyfriend when he stopped the comedian mid-way to “tell a joke.” The comedian Drew Lynch — who goes by the username @thedrewlynch on Instagram — shared a video of a hilarious moment that soon turned into tears and loud cheers from the audience.
During one of his stand-up comedy shows, Lynch was interrupted by an audience member, Jason, who had “written a joke for him to read out on stage.” He said, “You usually do ADHD stuff,” to which Lynch replied, “You have it? I can tell.” After a loud laughter from the audience and Lynch sarcastically yelling at him, asking him to read it at work, Jason passed him a piece of paper with the “joke” written on it. Lynch invited him on stage to read it himself and asked his girlfriend, Jenny, to tag along so she could record him because a comedian enjoys their joke being “commemorated.”
An oblivious Jenny happily accompanied her boyfriend to the stage when something unusual happened — instead of telling his joke, Jason kneeled down facing her. He said, "I know I am not the easiest person in the world to deal with… but I can't imagine going through this life dealing with the world with anyone but you." Jenny’s eyes widened, and her boyfriend’s voice started to break. An audience expecting a funny joke broke into deafening cheers as he pulled a ring from his pocket and popped the 4-worded-question, “Will you marry me?” — and just like that, she said, “Yes!”
In an interview by WNYC Studios, where they spoke with Tania Luna, the co-author of "Surprise: Embrace the Unpredictable and Engineer the Unexpected,” she said, “It’s a strong neuro alert that tells us that something is important about this moment and we have to pay attention. Our cognitive resources are basically hijacked and pulled into the moment. That’s one of the things that’s really uncomfortable for some people, but also exciting for some people because your attention is completely in the moment.” According to a 2022 study by the University of Denver’s Kimberly Chiew and others, surprises hold a huge value in our lives, help with our well-being, and create a memory for us to look back and reflect on. They also help shape our personalities and change the narrative of our lives by throwing us something unexpected but kind.
After watching the heartwarming video, viewers expressed their feelings. @ilovehealthysoda joked, “Bro had us in the first half, the second half, the third half,” and @princess_daniita_ commented, “The comedian understood the assignment within seconds. Great guy.” @donne_visser painted a hilarious picture, “Imagine he did all that, kneeled down, Jenny gets all excited, and then he goes, ‘So a horse walked into a bar...” @jbez2133 expressed, “I cried. IDC (I don’t care) what you think. Let’s go. Real men will do what it takes to make a moment memorable for a woman who deserves it too.”
