'It was a great house, and I'm glad that I was able to share it with you.'
According to a LendingTree survey, 58% of tenants admitted they've had at least one landlord they disliked. Among those, 53% reported poor communication, and 42% complained about lack of respect or professionalism. While landlord fiascos aren't rare, not every tenant faces difficulty in renting a home. At times, landlords can feel more like family. Chris Robarge encountered this surreal experience when his former landlord sent him a $2,500 check after selling the home, along with a heartfelt note. Chris took to his Facebook page to share the profound incident online.
It was the first house Chris had rented after he got divorced, so that place had become the only shelter for his healing heart. He had paid a fair amount of money for his accommodation and had a good time living there. Years later, Chris's former landlord contacted him, asking for his current address. The following day, in August 2021, he received a note from the landlord along with a $2,500 check. "It's a letter from that person, informing me that they sold their house and that they were paying me and every tenant they ever had for what we contributed to the profit they made from selling the house," Chris said. The ex-landlord explained that the rent he paid each month helped in paying off the mortgage, so they wanted to return to Chris the portion of the rent he had paid. "While it's not much, it's yours! It was a great house, and I'm glad that I was able to share it with you," the letter read.
Chris was beyond shocked because he hadn't expected anything like that from his former landlord. "All that I can say is that there are people who talk about their values and there are people who actually live them, and the reason I wanted to share this is that I want to encourage us all to actually live our values. Do it off the clock, do it when no one is watching, do it always," he wrote. Chris shared that he would keep $500 to repair his car and would give the rest to help others. "I have already given $500 to Black and Pink Massachusetts, I'm going to fill every Worcester Free Fridge, I'm making a donation to OurStory Edutainment, and I'm going to give some money out in the streets to people who need it. If you can't do what my former landlord did, let this inspire you to give whatever you can spare to someone or someplace that needs it," he added. Echoing the sentiments, someone called Kali Rohr Blakeslee commented, "What an amazing example of good karma. I’m sure you were careful to choose a landlord with similar values to you. This is wonderful."
Similarly, a user who goes by Judy Michaud Ferraresso on Facebook said, "Because of how conditioned we seem to be by bad news and people, I started reading this expecting that you were going to get a bill for something they said you owed from that time. What a shock to see what it actually was! I am so glad you shared this post to inspire more people to do what they can and pass on good things. I am just as proud of them as I am of you!"
