A grandson finds a heartfelt lunchbox note his granddad wrote to his then-school-going daughter, offering timeless wisdom and life lessons that still inspire today.
We often hear the best life lessons from our parents, who speak from the heart when we need it the most. Children expect words of wisdom from their mom and dad or their guardians whenever they are lost and cannot find a way out of difficult situations. Similarly, a grandson recently came across an old lunchbox note his grandad wrote to his mom during her PTA meeting. The beautifully crafted handwritten note shared by the grandson—who goes by u/Boonegoone on Reddit—still serves as inspiration for generations to come.
In the post, the grandson unveiled the handwritten note from his grandfather to his “sweetheart” daughter. It seemed like a thoughtfully crafted piece of writing, carefully considered during the PTA meeting when no one appeared to be around. “It’s been so many years since I sat in a chair this small and, with shaking hands, scribbled my first words. What a chore!” the loving granddad wrote. “Now that I look back, it wasn’t that long ago,” the grandfather continued, suggesting that life passes rapidly.
“And that we must study hard to prepare ourselves for the day when we spring from the nest to face the world alone,” the message to his then-school-going daughter read. Notably, the grandson discovered the well-kept note tucked away in an old photo album, probably by his mom.
Following this, the granddad, a caring father back in his day, gave his daughter a life lesson that brought tears to his grandson years later. The granddad further said, “We may never be rich, great, or well-known, but I hope that someday we’ll be able to look back and say with pride that we did our very best.”
He further advocated putting effort into anything and everything without thinking much of the consequences. “Work real hard and share a smile with a friend,” the vintage note concluded on a positive note, suggesting that his daughter also put a smile on her face through the thick and thin of life.
Lauding his grandfather, the grandson praised him as a “beautiful writer,” and expressed how fortunate he was to have been raised by such a “loving and thoughtful family.” When someone asked in the comments if the elderly gentleman had seen the note for all these years, the grandson said he had not.
Agreeing that the note would be a sweet reminder of the good old days for his granddad, the grandson remarked, “I’m actually unsure if my mom has shown it to him yet, but they see each other nearly every day now. I’ll be sure to show him the next time I see him.” The grandson added that his grandfather attempted to write several books, including an autobiography that he’d tried to find.
Meanwhile, several people started showering their love on the old man for consistently supporting his daughter. “Please let him know that his letter not only made his daughter smile and feel supported but also the thousands of us that are reading it today! Please give him a hug from us,” u/quiet_monsters commented.
“Visiting my mom after her husband passed, I found a crumpled note on the counter. It was from him, reminding her that he loved her no matter what. My coffee was a bit salty from my tears,” u/Snowman123456789 recalled.
The grandson shared his grandad’s name when a commenter asked him. “His name’s Leonard, but he’s always gone by Larry," he shared. “He turned 83 in September.”
