People are always looking for better deals while shopping. One of the best ways to acquire the same is via a subscription of loyalty towards a particular brand. Millions of people cling to an Amazon Prime subscription to enjoy added benefits while saving some money. The subscription has been taken up by many due to its free shipping, discounts and other perks. However, Daniel Schaal—who goes by @thatschaalfolks on TikTok—shared that Amazon may be charging Prime members more than others without their knowledge. The man revealed that he arrived at the bizarre fact after his recent observation while shopping online.

“Amazon is being shady right now. I could be wrong, but I’m like 99.23% right here,” he remarked. Schaal mentioned that he had an Amazon Prime account, which promises several benefits in return for an annual subscription fee. “It’s not much and I’m not getting it back. But it’s okay because I’m getting free shipping and Amazon video and stuff,” he said. Schaal then explained that he went to purchase something for his sister, who didn’t have a Prime account. “If she wants something in two days or for free shipping, she contacts me,” he added.

In a similar case, he purchased something for his sister to get it shipped sooner and for free shipping, but he was baffled after comparing the invoices. Schaal shared screenshots of the invoices for the same product from his Prime account and his sister’s regular account and was astounded. The item cost his sister $80.95 and additional charges were about $10 to the order. “She has a $3 shipping charge and her delivery will show up in two weeks,” Schaal mentioned. “When I buy it, it will show up on the same day, which is great and there’s free shipping too, awesome. But is it free?” he asked.

Moving to the screenshot of the order from his account, he was boggled to see that the same item was priced at $89.10 for him. “Look at that, I get free shipping, but it starts $9 higher than when my sister, who doesn’t have a Prime membership, tries to buy it,” he remarked. He added that his total was coming to $96.92, which was $6 higher than what his sister was paying. “It’s more expensive to have a Prime membership,” he said. Schaal explained that the mixup could be happening because customers who avail of the Prime membership have no way of figuring out what the price differences are.

“How does this make sense? This is bogus!” he concluded. People had several theories about why the price difference would have occurred. @thatnamemistakentoo wrote, “Amazon often priced items differently based on location. Do you live in a ‘nicer’ area than your sister?” @i.want.fries.with.that added, “Time to go incognito mode and check the price before purchasing.” @dirtysheppy mentioned, “My fiance and I both have Prime accounts. But we get different prices and delivery dates for the same item in the same house.” @carnivrusrabbit wrote, “$6 plus one million subscribers. You’re not wrong!” @megwhitepnw exclaimed, “I noticed this too. They are baking the shipping cost into the price and it’s nuts.”
