Love alone can not sustain a marriage. It also needs constant effort, trust, loyalty, and companionship. Even after years of wedlock, if the foundation of a marriage is weak, it may crumble apart. However, those who crack the fundamentals of a healthy relationship build a happy married life where love and romance continue to thrive. On a related note, a man who goes by u/mediocre-low-8428 on Reddit shared how a surprising encounter with his ex-girlfriend only solidified his love for his wife.

The couple had to attend a friend's wedding, and the man had already anticipated meeting his ex-girlfriend, whom he had dated for 7 years. However, they had not seen each other for years after they parted ways. He shared that he was nervous, not because he thought things would blow out of proportion but simply because it was awkward. "This girl, my ex, was once my best friend, even prior to dating, and our breakup sort of divided our whole friend group. I have always wanted nothing more than to be in the same room again, just being friends," he revealed.

Cut to the friend's wedding, when he finally saw his ex-girlfriend sitting alone at a table. He pulled up his wife and went near her. "We made eye contact, smiled, and immediately hugged. I introduced her to my wife, and they began talking for a bit. We picked up right where we left off, talking about everything we'd been up to, catching up on where we were living, and making fun of the groom, who was a mutual best friend of ours," he shared. The night continued with the couple meeting each other a few more times. The man was relieved and felt like everything was perfect, like the good old days when friends hung out without hesitation.

"We even took a photo together. My wife, being the awesome person she is, shamelessly shared it on social media. My friends couldn’t believe we were all hanging out. My wife never said anything bad about my ex, nor did she make any jokes about how well it went compared to when we saw her ex, which she had every right to!" he shared. After the wedding, the couple was heading back home, and he couldn't stop staring at his wife. He revealed that he was just overwhelmed looking at his partner. "I truly felt closer to her and honestly looked up to her. I want to be like her. And she’s everything I have ever wanted. I hope that I get a second chance and can do the same for her," he added.

Notably, earlier, when the man had a similar encounter with his wife's most recent ex, he didn't take it very well. The man further explained that everything was just very fresh, and they couldn't handle the situation with grace. "I’ve regretted the way I reacted ever since and always wish I could do it over, especially knowing how I feel about seeing my ex. My wife knows this, as we’ve had many talks about it, and of course, she understands," read the post. Meanwhile, u/pleasant-event-8523 commented, "This is the best feeling in the world. Having a partner you truly love and are devoted to is surely the most valuable thing in life. I feel the same way about my wife, and every day I love and appreciate her more than the day before. You’re a lucky man."

Treasure her as she clearly treasures you." u/therealpaterpatriae said, "I’m glad you got to experience that. I’m in a similar situation with the ex thing, but unfortunately, I don’t think there is ever a chance of being friends or even acquaintances again unless there is a miracle. But my current long-term partner also understands and never expresses any sort of misunderstanding about that."
