'Fast forward 20+ years later to my mother's diagnosis; my father was one of the first people by her side when she was released from the hospital'

In most cases, post-breakup, people dump away the memories of their exes in a shadowy dungeon of their minds and lock them up, intending to never revisit them. But one man revisited his, not just revisited but demonstrated what it means to stay true to one’s wedding vows amidst an uncertain future. Well, we're talking about Megan Tai's father, who, almost thirty years after the divorce, returned to his ex-wife's life after learning about her cancer diagnosis in 2024. A heartfelt video of him taking care of his former partner went viral on social media, capturing the true meaning of "in sickness and health."

Megan Tai's parents met each other more than 30 years ago in California, when her dad was in the military, according to Goalcoast. They fell in love, got married, and had two children: Tai and her older brother. Things, however, start to fall apart shortly after her birth, leading to their divorce. While Tai's dad returned to his hometown in Hawaii, her mom started working as an elementary school teacher to raise her kids singlehandedly. For years, the couple never contacted each other, but that changed almost three decades later when Tai's mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 endometrial cancer.

Soon after the cancer diagnosis, Tai, who graduated in marriage and family therapy, moved in with her mom for support. While she was struggling to manage everything alone, her father stepped in as a pillar of strength. "Fast forward 20+ years later to my mother's diagnosis; my father was one of the first people by her side when she was released from the hospital," she wrote on a GoFundMe page, which now stands deleted.
In the 20-second video, Tai shared a compilation of her dad assisting his ex-wife through the difficult times. From helping her while exercising to cooking her meals and taking her out on a drive, his father did everything a husband would for his ailing wife. "They talked for hours. They bickered like they were still married. They laughed. They helped me see them as they were when they were younger," Tai wrote.

Research on 515 married patients with serious illness found that 11.6% of couples separated after the diagnosis. Moreover, researchers also found a major gender-based difference. They observed that men are more likely to leave their wives after their diagnosis as compared to women. In fact, in the study, 20.8% of marriages ended after the wife was diagnosed with a serious illness such as cancer or brain tumors, while only 2.9% of marriages ended after the husband's diagnosis. In a world where men are willing to leave their spouses alone during a health crisis, Tai's father chose to stay, proving real love stays amidst all uncertainty and darkness.
