As he stopped at an ATM, he saw $300 sitting by the cash dispenser and no one around to claim it.

A man who once returned money he found in a wallet is now considered family to the woman whose daughter’s life was saved because of it. u/Nephilim6853 shared the story in response to a post by u/PineappleCultural, who described returning $300 that he discovered while visiting an ATM, asking if he did the right thing. In response, u/Nephilim6853 wrote, "The bank will simply look at Sunday’s withdrawals from the ATM and contact the account holder that attempted to get money, or discover the ATM had a glitch. The key, it wasn't your money, you did the right thing." He went on to share a piercing story on how important it was to return what isn't ours.

"I once found a wallet, with $10k in it,” he wrote. “I was young and really considered keeping it.” Instead, he looked up the name on the ID, found a matching address in the phone book, and made a call. The man on the other end confirmed he’d lost his wallet. After verifying the information, the poster drove over and returned it personally. When the owner counted the money and asked why they hadn't kept it, they replied, “It wasn’t mine, I hadn’t earned it. Plus no one carries that much cash unless it’s important.” The money was the down payment for a life-saving surgery for the man’s daughter. The wallet’s owner offered him a reward, but he declined, asking only for an update on the girl’s condition. A week later, he got a call saying that the surgery had gone well.

“I could tell he was stressed out and would benefit from talking to me,” the Redditor wrote. “I asked him some questions and he opened up… we were on the phone for hours. His voice was calmer and he was more relaxed at the end of the call.” A month later, he was invited to the girl’s welcome home party, and that day marked the beginning of a bond that would last for years. He wrote, “I attended and met his daughter, her friends, and his family. He told me that the phone call before really helped him and he was grateful.” Since then, he’s been part of every major moment in the girl’s life. “I’ve been to every school play, graduation, and will be at her wedding. All from returning someone’s wallet.”

At the time, the gesture may have seemed thankless. But research suggests this kind of civic honesty is more common than many assume. A 2019 global study published in Science tested honesty by dropping over 17,000 wallets in 40 countries. The researchers found that people were more likely to return wallets with money than without, even when the amount increased. They concluded that self-image and moral responsibility often outweigh self-interest.

The story resonated with readers, with the comment gaining over 7.8k upvotes. Many praised the man for doing the right thing. u/darkangel10848 wrote, “You got something worth so much more than $10k… beautiful!!! You gained an extended family! That’s priceless!” u/darkangel10848 added, “You are a rare and wonderful human and it sounds like you deserve any blessings/good karma/good luck/happy accidents that happen in your life.” u/Ok-Anteater_6635x said, “This should be higher. Not for the help to the OP, but how something insignificant for a person can change another person's life.”
