Husband's ex kept poking her nose into their marriage for 12 years. His wife asked him to put an end to it — but his reply stunned her

Ever since they got married, this lady has been coming and going in their life, sometimes trying to connect with them on social media

The blurred line between past and present can often strain a relationship. A 36-year-old woman (u/temporary-display388), who had been married for 12 years, found herself in a similar situation when her husband's ex kept intruding on their lives, almost sporadically. In a July 8, 2026, Reddit post, she recounted how her husband refused to take a stand for her, leaving her disheartened.

Mystery woman

The strange lady lingered like a mystery in their lives ever since the couple got married 12 years ago. It was a spontaneous marriage. They were living in the country, and one day, out of the blue, they decided to get married two days later. On the wedding day, the woman was browsing Facebook on her husband's laptop and noticed a message from this lady. "There was a message from a woman saying she was sorry and hoped he would be happy now that he was married," she recalled.

The first question that came to the woman’s mind was how this lady knew about their marriage when her husband’s own parents weren’t aware of it. When she confronted him, he changed his answer multiple times. First, the man refused to recognize her, then admitted she was an ex who cheated on him. "Then he said she had given him chlamydia and that he hadn't seen her in five years. She isn't from my country or his," the woman recalled.

Husband refuses to stand up

Later, when the author asked him to communicate and request that she leave them alone, he responded that he didn’t want to hurt her feelings. He even refused to block her on social media. As a consequence, this lady continued intruding on their lives every once in a while, magnifying the woman’s suspicions and discomfort to the point of paranoia.

Then one day, the mystery lady added the author and her husband to her Facebook. Instead of confronting her, her husband deleted his account. Later, the lady reached out to the man's sister and asked whether she remembered her. Fuming, the author asked her husband to call the strange lady and ask her to “f**k off.” But he refused, saying he had converted to a “strict Christian” six years back and can't swear at a woman. He argued that he would rather divorce his wife than curse the lady. When the woman said that his behavior was unreasonable, he asked her to leave.

Intrusion of a third party

According to research by Stephanie Spielmann, Tara Marshall, and others, one of the reasons an ex reaches out to a person is when they see them thriving with someone else. Sometimes, they may reach out of curiosity or even jealousy. Overall, about 50% of people stay in contact even after breaking up. However, when conflict with an ex-partner starts spilling into the current relationship, it causes trouble.

Similarly, a study published by Boise State University stated that a third person has the potential to create various complications in a dyadic relationship. Even though there is still a possibility of positive outcomes, behaviours such as triangulation and overstepping boundaries can create tensions in a couple’s relationship.

Most people who read the woman’s story were astonished by why she was putting up with a husband who didn’t care enough to cut contact with his ex, even though they had been married for 12 years. u/Christinsey commented, “Literally after your wedding, he lied to you about who she was, and refused to end the relationship with her, and you allowed it. He is now a ‘Christian,’ which is probably more misogynistic than spiritual, but he is supposed to honor his wife. He is not doing that,” u/delirium_red declared, “I would think divorce is a much bigger sin than a swear word. Your husband is full of it!”
