A 33-year-old man was ecstatic upon winning $20,000 after his brother-in-law forced him to buy the lottery ticket. However, his happiness was short-lived as his entire family, including his sister and brother-in-law, turned against him after he refused to share his lottery winnings with them. The man (u/low-assistant-4712) vented his family's unreal expectations on April 29. His post has received over 5,000 upvotes on Reddit.

The 'accidental' win

The man shared that his sister and brother-in-law spend between $400 and $800 monthly on scratch-off tickets. Ironically, the couple struggles financially, but wasting money on lottery tickets never bothered them. Once during a trip to a gas station, his brother-in-law used $520 on a scratch-off ticket. Moreover, when he saw the author judging him, he insisted he must buy a ticket. "So I pulled a single dollar bill out and bought the Halloween-themed scratch-off," the man recalled. He did not expect to win, but then the cashier announced that he had actually won a $20,000 lottery prize. "My brother-in-law immediately cycled through emotions before demanding I hand the ticket over for him to see, then making a scene in the gas station when I asked to borrow a pen and started filling out the back of the card," the man shared.

The lottery fallout

As news of his win spread through the man's family, they pressured him to share the lottery prize with them. In fact, his sister and brother-in-law gaslighted him into splitting it with them. The man refused, only to have his parents ask him to hand them over $10,000. He refused again, but this time, the situation escalated as his family started name-calling him at the Thanksgiving dinner. In fact, his eldest brother suggested that the man cover a family vacation, and other siblings demanded a share in his lottery winnings. "I again turn them all down, which of course turns into everyone calling me selfish and an a**hole, amongst other colorful words," the man added.

Cash, clash, and family feud

A survey by the CFP Board (U.S.) found that more than half (57%) of respondents have experienced tension in finance-related matters with their spouse or partner. The study revealed that younger adults (ages 40 or less) are more likely to experience relationship tensions because of money with (28%) close friends, (36%) parents/in-laws, and (32%) siblings. It means fights between families over wealth aren't unusual, but the way we tackle them is what makes the difference.

Meanwhile, netizens stepped in support of the author for taking a stand against his relatives. For instance, u/antique-nose-5604 commented, "It's funny how everyone else knows what YOU should do with your winnings. Nobody has your best interests at heart. Nobody suggested you save it or buy something you’ve always wanted. They want their share. You are NOT the AH." Similarly, u/muphasta shared, "It reminds me of my mom's best friend (gambling addict) telling my mom that she (my mom) needs to pay her ('friend') $2k for a ride home after the friend lost $5k and my mom won $10k on slots at the local casino. The 'friend' called my mom a 'f****** bitch' when she hit the jackpot. The friendship went cold after that."
