It's never easy for mothers traveling with their babies, especially when you consider the complaints that could arise from babies crying.
Mothers with young babies are expected not only to care for them but also to be mindful of their surroundings—especially during flights, when many children can become restless. In such situations, parents often bear the brunt of fellow passengers' frustration. However, one mom went above and beyond to maintain order while also finding a clever way to encourage cooperation from other travelers. During a recent flight, content creator Elliott—who goes by @callmebelly on TikTok—was surprised to receive a Ziploc bag full of candies, not from the airline but from a mother. In his video, Elliott grew emotional over the thoughtful gesture, sparking an important discussion about the expectations placed on mothers while traveling.
It began when Elliott boarded a flight and discovered a young baby and his mom traveling together. Like most people, he likely expected to endure the child's inevitable fussing or crying. However, Elliott was surprised by the mother's kind gesture. Never before, in his flying history, had he come across such a rare sight. The mother handed him and other passengers a goody bag, which made him emotional. Notably, the transparent pack contained a variety of candies, including a few chocolates.
“I want to cry. A mom with her newborn in front of me on the plane gave me this,” the text overlay on the video read. The mother went out of her way to customize these goody bags for most people on the flight. In return, all she expected from her co-travelers was kindness and support in case the little one panicked once the flight took off. While lauding the mom, Elliott suggested through the overlaid text: “She’s already so busy and took the time to make these bags for everyone.”
Interestingly, apart from the candies, the bags had an intriguing message on them for the travelers: “It’s my first flight! I made a deal to be on my best behavior—but I can’t make any guarantees! I might cry if I get scared or if my ears start to hurt. Here are some treats to make your flight enjoyable. Thank you for being patient with us. Have a great flight!” While the mom was praised for her sweet gesture, many still felt it was heartbreaking to have such expectations from her. Apart from racking up 10 million views on social media, it received countless reactions from parents across the globe.
“Dear new parents: No, you don't have to do this. Your babies have the right to exist and be. We all know babies cry. We know you try your best,” @febevandewiele pointed out. “This is so sweet but also kind of breaks my heart that we live in a world in which parents feel the need to do that,” @zarahanawalt echoed similar sentiments. "This makes me feel so bad that mothers are shamed into doing this. Do people no longer have compassion or empathy?" asked @beachlifemumma.
