One of the biggest financial strains on an individual today is affording rent. It’s no news that rent is skyrocketing, and our savings are running dry trying to pay up. If there’s one thing we all want, it’s to have the rent prices reduced. A man who goes by @dustyjoylife revealed there might actually be a way to make this happen. He spilled the beans on how to make this work, and since everyone is already united with the same goal, many were game for it. Some even offered creative suggestions to make it happen. The man noted that the method is one he had been experimenting with his friends, and not only is it fun, but it’s also satisfying and yields results.

The idea is very simple. He suggested that anytime you notice a “For Rent” sign put up, you should text the number and “meet their audacity.” Since rent prices are almost always at an ungodly rate, the man noted that people need to put on a similar confident and bold attitude if they want to deal with it. Before they can express their interest or even make an offer and negotiate, the first thing the user asked others to do is “meet their audacity.” And what does that look like? “Text the number put up on the sign and write, ‘That’s too much,’” the man suggested. Nothing more, nothing less.

According to Nerd Wallet, rent prices are 35.1% higher than what it used to be before the pandemic. Statistics from 2023 revealed that around 22.6 million households were unable to afford rent due to its all-time high. People are spending 30% or more of their income on rent alone, and it is financially straining. It is no surprise that people are ready to settle for the bare minimum just so the rent is affordable and they have a roof over their heads. The man explained that the simple hack, if coordinated by a majority, can yield results. Firstly, it will suggest the idea that maybe there is a public consensus on the rent being too high.

Secondly, it will push the agent to make a better deal. The person explained how his small initiative, together with his friends, showed a positive outcome. They were glad to see landlords offering $100 to $200 off on some deals. He went on to point out that if this takes place on a higher majority, it will undoubtedly bring down the price based on demand. Many people appreciated the idea and hopped on. Others added to it. @emilytangerine666 said, “I actually think that social pressure could work.

@violettamezanotte added, “Even if you’re not in the market to rent, just text anyway.” @weeeeethisisfun remarked, “Not like it’s a lie… may as well tell them.” @elariwuinn went one step further and said that this trick could be used with the job market, too. “Even if you aren’t currently looking, apply, and if you get an interview, decline and say the pay is too low,” the user wrote. @grammyninja1 noted, “They’ve been doing this for decades in San Diego, in Santa Cruz and you’re right, it works. We all just need to work with the same mentality.”
