Laura Scheel and Matt Grodsky met at a preschool, not knowing that it was the beginning of their fairy-tale love story. The couple had been inseparable since they were kids; in fact, Grodsky said he remembers standing up in front of his whole class and announcing that he would marry his best friend, Scheel, someday.

"As kids, Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the 'right way' to properly eat string cheese," he added, fondly reminiscing about how they would spend time playing hide-and-go-seek, running after each other, and staying up during nap time. In a heartfelt post featured on The Way We Met's page (@thewaywemet on Instagram), Grodsky admitted that he had been in love with Scheel since childhood, but they lost touch for years after elementary school. "For the next seven years, our family's annual Christmas cards were the only way we ever saw each other's faces," he added. Then came high school, when Grodsky and Scheel reconnected through a mutual friend. This was it for the duo, as within 2 weeks, they got into dating each other. "We continued to date throughout all of high school, even though we went to different schools. We even stuck together long-distance while attending college in different states," Grodsky shared.

After dating for years, Grodsky decided to take his relationship to the next level. In May 2015, he proposed marriage to Scheel at the preschool — the same place they had first met. Scheel hadn't anticipated Grodsky popping the 'Will you?' question; she thought they were down for a picnic date. "The whole car ride to the preschool, she kept asking me why I seemed anxious. I kept checking my pocket when she wasn’t looking to make sure the ring was still there. I dropped down on one knee while my brother came in with the phone, snapping photos. Scheel was shocked. I gave her my pitch on why I wanted her to marry me, and she said yes ― whew," Grodsky told HuffPost. Finally, the couple married each other in December 2016, proving that not all promises are fake — not even the ones made in preschool. Grodsky could achieve something that many only dream about, and that is marrying their first love.

According to a YouGov study, people who have married their first love are more likely to have never thought about breaking up. Based on the 2014 report, only 27% of participants surveyed confessed to marrying their first love (which is 13% of all adults in the UK). This shows why Laura and Grodsky's epic story stands as a reminder that love, when real, can flourish across decades.
