Man deliberately lied about not having Apple Pay just to avoid buying his date water — when he admitted it was a test, she ended it

Every once in a while, everyone meets a person who is willing to go to absurd lengths just to prove a point. One woman, Ms. Carter (@yeahsoimerica), met someone who took that idea to an absurd extreme. She uncovered his absurdity after a workout, when he lied about not using Apple Pay and refused to buy her a bottle of water after her phone died. Carter later narrated the entire experience on TikTok on 30 July 2026, garnering over 83,000 likes.
Ignoring the first offence
It all began when Carter started going out with a man. Soon, they decided to start working out together. It started pretty well, but within the first day, she noticed a red flag. After finishing the tiring workout, Carter went to grab a drink. However, once she did that, she noticed that the man didn't offer to pay for the drink. Nonetheless, she didn't make a deal of it. "I didn't trip. Like I just met him. I'm not going to worry about that," she said. But she did keep a note of it, as she valued kind gestures, especially in someone she was seeing.
Lying to her face
Things took an unexpected turn the very next day. Once again, as the pair finished the workout, Carter headed out to get some water. Although the man had brought her one bottle from his home, she needed one more. But as she was about to pay for the second bottle, her phone died. So, naturally, she turned to her partner, knowing that he had his phone. But when she asked him to pay for the bottle, the man claimed that he didn't have any of his cards on Apple Pay. Even after this, Carter tried to play it cool as they started walking to cool down.
Getting caught in his lies
Shortly after, Carter candidly asked him about having Apple Pay, since almost everyone uses it. To her surprise, the man replied, "What do you mean? Of course, I got Apple Pay." Shocked by this revelation, she took a small pause before asking him about the lie he told her at the bodega. But before she could get him to answer, his friend called. This irritated Carter, as she waited for him to finish his call. Nonetheless, he soon revealed that since she told him she was "spoiled," he just wanted to "undo" that.
Playing mind games
Recognizing that he was caught, the man tried to defend himself by bringing in Carter's previous date. When that didn't work, he started to say how he would've gotten her water at his home. Then, taking things even further up a notch by stating how he would've treated her lavishly when they went on real dates and so on. It was soon after that Carter pushed back, "That was clearly a problem you could've solved as a man and basically took to project your fears and insecurities," she said.
A half-hearted apology
The exchange peaked when the man even lied about apologizing. When pushed, he offered a half-hearted apology. But by then it was too late, and the damage had already been done. While he tried to manipulate the conversation by stating that Carter was only rejecting him because he didn't buy her water, she was not having any of it. She emphasized the fact that it was never about the water but about honesty instead, as she decided to end things with him.
Financially forthcoming with partners
The incident also raises questions about honesty and financial expectations in relationships. According to the BMO Real Financial Progress Index, 66% of Americans are financially forthcoming with their partners, while 24% consider not always telling the truth about money a dealbreaker. As a result of this, they spend less than people who are not honest ($182 per date vs. $195 per date).
All this just over water?
Nonetheless, the viewers were divided by the incident. @rekyndl commented, "unspoil over water????? he wanted you to die of thirsty clearly." At the same time, @cuteassotaku noted, "I had a man hear all the things my dad, best friend (a guy), and my brother do for me… he proceeded to say he’ll get me outta the habit of expecting. NO YOU WON'T."
