Date mocked woman for saying she was 5'4" on Hinge. The irony? He claimed to be 5'11" while standing almost eye-to-eye with her

When you match with someone online, there is always a chance of being catfished. But nothing quite prepares a person for a date who mocks them for their height, even though they are standing eye to eye with them. That was the strange reality for a woman named Lexie (@spicycokezero) a couple of years ago on her first date. He claimed to be 5'11" on Hinge, but in reality, he was just 5'4". Throughout the evening, he looked down on her both literally and figuratively. Lexie decided to share her terrible experience on TikTok on August 11, 2026, garnering over 135,000 views. 

Arranging the first date

The ordeal began after the pair matched on Hinge. Shortly after, Lexie and the man started hitting it off over text. Naturally, they decided to take things to the next level by agreeing to meet in person. Since her date was making an hour-long trip to her town, she decided to offer him three restaurant options to choose from. After much deliberation, the man chose Chili's, a choice she hadn't really initially envisioned for their first date. Nevertheless, she agreed to it.

An awkward arrival

Things felt off the moment she reached the venue. After Lexie texted that she had pulled into the parking lot, he asked for a moment because he was on a call with a friend. Then, before she could even step out of her car, she watched him speed-walk into the restaurant. To make matters worse, inside the restaurant, he was already seated at a table, examining the menu, bypassing any standard greeting without so much as a handshake, a hug, or even a simple "hi." 

Unsolicited critique 

Throughout the meal, the conversation remained entirely one-sided as Lexie's date boasted about her vehicle. "A Nissan Altima is not the flex that you think it is," she said, given that it was the exact car she also had at the time. At the same time, whenever she did try to contribute to the conversation, the dynamic soured. After she mentioned wanting to dye her hair blonde, the man bluntly told her, "I really don't think you should go blonde." But that wasn't all. He later even made condescending quips about her car knowledge when she mixed up automotive terms. 

The height dispute

The man also kept complaining about Chili's even though he only picked it. Nonetheless, the tensions peaked when the two started walking out into the parking lot. Standing at her exact eye level, he challenged her measurements. "You're definitely not 5'4''," he said. Despite claiming on his profile that he stood at five foot eleven, he insisted she was the one lying while matching her shoulder to shoulder.

A bizarre goodbye

Soon, the pair parted ways with a brief and quite distant goodbye. Trying to remain polite, Lexie sent a courtesy follow-up text a couple of hours later, thanking him for the meal and expressing hope that he got home okay. Rather than delivering a typical response, the man replied, "No. I got in a car crash. I'm dead." That was perhaps the final straw for Lexie, who never reached out to him again, drawing the curtains on their relationship for good. 

Disappointed by dating apps

Lexie's experience sheds light on the broader issue with online dating. According to a Pew Research survey, 90% of women and 87% of men who used dating sites or apps in the past year said they had felt disappointed by people they saw on the platforms. Meanwhile, 54% of women felt overwhelmed by the number of messages they received. Nearly half of Americans (49%) also said dating sites and apps were not too or not at all safe ways to meet people.

Lying about height is crazy

As for the people, they were in shock by the entire incident. @.say.a wrote, "he def rushed into the restaurant like that so you wouldn’t notice he lied about his height." Sharing the same sentiment, @katherinet875 commented, "I feel like 5'8" is the new height that shorter guys are putting on their profiles. I’m 5’3'', and I’ve been on so many dates where I’m the exact same height as them, in flats, & they’re supposed to be 5 inches taller than me."
