Mysterious 'break-in' left a New Jersey couple confused when the only evidence was a cleaner house

Louis thought he was cleaning Mark's apartment because the key was where Mark said it was

Mysterious 'break-in' left a New Jersey couple confused when the only evidence was a cleaner house

At first, it looked like someone had broken into a New Jersey couple’s home, but nothing was missing, and everything was spotless. That strange situation quickly turned into a mix-up involving  Louis Angelino III from New Jersey, who had shown up to clean a friend’s house but ended up working in the wrong one for nearly two hours. He later shared the incident on his TikTok (@louieangelino) and also during an interview with 9 News (@9news) on July 13, 2021.

How he ended up in the wrong house

It all started when Angelino, who takes up cleaning jobs on the side to earn extra cash, arrived at Cherry Hill, South Jersey, and found the key under the mat, as Mark instructed. The moment he stepped inside, he put on some good tunes and started cleaning. He had been working on the house for two hours, and even had two cats, Mary and Baby, for company. However, after a while, he received a call from Mark asking if he was going to clean the house that day. Angelino gave him a sassy reply, saying that he was waiting for Mark to walk into the living room while he was playing with Mark's cat. Only when Mark said he did not have cats did Angelino realize he was in the wrong house.

The moment he realized the mistake

Instead of Mark's house, Angelino had been cleaning Tom and Beth Motzel's house, complete strangers. When Tom returned home, he called Beth and told her that the house had been broken into, but instead of taking anything, the 'intruder' cleaned their house. The couple saw the humor in the situation and chose not to press any charges. Speaking to 9 News, Beth said, "Tom and I laughed forever about it. He fixed it all up, I mean, details. He cleaned after the cats, he played with the cats, and he fed the cats. He wiped everything spotless. He really is a cleaning fairy."

Clean house, clean mind

In his interview, Angelino said that cleaning helps him with his mental health. "I realized cleaning was like my therapy because when I took a messy situation, and I made it all nice and neat afterward, it was very satisfying to me," he told ABC 11, adding, "If you're in a clean environment, your mind is clean." Many Americans agree with Angelino's statement. A 2024 survey during Mental Health Awareness Month found that 70% of Americans agree that a clean house gives them a sense of accomplishment, and 66% think it enhances their mood. 60% noticed how a clean home reduces their stress and anxiety, and 63% testified that it made them more productive.

Several people in the comments found the story hilarious, but a few enquired if the Motzels paid Angelino for accidentally cleaning their house. Some even asked if they had hired him after that incident. @Ebizzill commented, "I would have paid him. The fact that they didn't have to even spend time looking for someone, it's worth it." @bennettfriesen6080 wrote, "They really need to meet each other and video that."
