Jacob Allmendinger expected to return home to North Ferriby, East Yorkshire, with an empty bank account. However, destiny had other plans

From unforgettable pitch-side drama to unexpected hospitality, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has already provided some incredible stories. However, none can quite compare to the heartfelt gesture of a grandson's ultimate thank-you note. Jacob Allmendinger, a 21-year-old, spent his entire savings of $13,400 to take his 80-year-old grandfather, Geoff Golliker, on a dream trip across North America to watch England play. He expected to return home to North Ferriby, East Yorkshire, with an empty bank account. However, destiny had other plans, as something unexpected happened to him just a few days ago, as reported by the BBC on July 7, 2026.
It all started when Allmendinger made the quiet choice of putting his future on hold. He chose to spend his entire life savings to treat his grandfather to the tournament of a lifetime rather than putting a down payment on a new home. He revealed that he had been taken to Hull City games by his grandad since he was a little kid, and wanted to return the favor. In other words, he prioritized memories over money, as he believes that it can be earned back, but these moments with his grandfather won't come back.

With that cleared out, the duo officially kicked off their tour when they touched down in New York. Almost immediately, the sheer scale of the internet caught up with them. A stranger approached them on the Manhattan streets, recognizing them from the social media updates and confirming that their grandfather-grandson bond was already striking a chord worldwide. Nonetheless, after watching the first game against Panama, they headed to Atlanta to watch the game against DR Congo as well as England's historic 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico.
The turning point came during the first game, before which the US-based online crypto casino Metawin vowed to pay back their money, the entire $13,400, if England beat Panama by more than two goals. However, that didn't happen. So, Allmendinger thought that their chance was gone, but right then, the company stated that they'd honor their promise if England beat DR Congo, no matter the scoreline. Sure enough, England won 2-1 against DR Congo.

Following the final whistle, Allmendinger was stunned to see the company actually honor its promise. "I didn’t quite believe it, to be honest, until I looked at my bank and it was there. I was just in shock," he said. It is truly great to see him getting his money back; for now, Jacob and his grandad are still in Mexico and will be travelling to Miami to see England take on Norway in the quarter-finals, continuing what has been a life-changing journey for the two of them thus far.
As for the money, Jacob said that he'll keep it safe in his bank account. He stated that he might actually use this to buy a house or even go to the European Championship with his grandad. But that's for later; for now, the pair's focus remains on the coveted 2026 World Cup. That being said, this story highlights the rising costs of attending major sporting events, not only the soccer World Cup. In fact, many believe that it has become a luxury.
According to a survey held by YouGov, 67% of fans say that attending a sporting event live has become somewhat out of their reach and has become unaffordable. Only 13% of the fans say that they feel that attending a game at any level is affordable for them. Out of these, 75% of fans see the rising cost of tickets as the biggest barrier stopping them from attending a sports event.

That's why people are quite happy to see a young man like Jacob go to the extents that he has to attend the games with his grandad. In the comment section of a Facebook post regarding the same by BBC East Yorkshire, Dean Hodgson wrote, "What a fantastic memory to create. Choosing memories with his grandad over buying a house. Legend!!" At the same time, Amanda Howes commented, "It’s a win-win as he’s probably got it back from all the media, but good on him for doing it and having quality time with his grandad."
