It's common for people to let family members stay temporarily during tough times. But when guests overstay their welcome and cause problems, drastic steps may be needed. Reddit user u/Mosifer_666 shared how he dealt with his sister-in-law after she refused to leave and caused stress for his pregnant wife.
He explained that a few years ago, his wife's sister needed a place to stay for a short time, so they offered her a room for a couple of months. They clearly told her she could hang pictures as long as the holes were no bigger than thumbtacks, and she agreed. "A week later, she mounted shelves and used wall anchors for heavy framed pictures. Then she brought in a mini fridge. We were upset, but the damage was done," he wrote. A month later, when they found out they were expecting a baby, he informed his sister-in-law that they would need the room in two months.
He wrote, "Two months was about up and she hadn't done anything to move out and decided to pretty much pull a bunch of b******* that she was entitled to stay there because she's taken up residency now that she had mail coming there and that she'd need a few more months to get ready to move out and if we have a problem we can take it up with a lawyer." Although upset about this turn of events, the man decided not to react. But then she began to torment his wife. "She'd deliberately do s**t to piss my wife off, like spray her nasty perfume all over the place, knowing it made my pregnant wife vomit when she smelled it," the husband explained.
So, they put up a fan to blow towards his sister-in-law's room to keep the smell away from their room. But then the woman stole their fan and wouldn't give it back to them. He recalled, "Cops were called and she just claimed she didn't have it and then tried to get me in trouble for having guns in the house, but cops took my side and backed me for having firearms and keeping in my safe." After this instance, the man decided to teach his sister-in-law a lesson. He bought storage totes and packed up all the pots, pans, eating utensils, cooking utensils, plates and cups and put master locks on them. He then took the water cooler and jugs of water and put them in their room along with the coffee pot, microwave and toaster.
He shared, "It upset my wife to have to deal with extra b******* to get the things we needed, but it did make me happy knowing my sister-in-law couldn't do anything to make food or anything and she ultimately left not long after." People in the comments were upset about the sister-in-law's entitled behavior but appreciated the husband's response. u/librarymouse4321 commented, "Should have immediately started eviction process. Once evicted, it'll be in her record and can mess her up in the future." u/cassowary32 wrote, "That's wild that she'd do that to her own family! I'm glad you were able to get her out and I hope everything went well with the pregnancy."
u/_gadget_girl expressed, "Good for you. The best way to get rid of unwanted roommates is to convince them that they will be miserable if they stay. Petty can be way more effective and much cheaper than legal eviction." u/illustrious_leek9977 said, "I absolutely love that you took up for your wife! As you can see, family can be hell sometimes, and some spouses choose to stay out of it. (And it's their right if they want to). But I love how you stood up for your wife and helped her. Thank you!"
