A quick investigation not only cleared the allegations but also cost him his garage

You reap what you sow — a man learned it the hard way when he tried to report his neighbor over something completely unnecessary. Well, it all began when he called the cops on his neighbor, falsely accusing him of having an illegal driveway. However, a quick investigation not only cleared the allegations but also cost him his expensive garage. The story was shared by the neighbor's adult kid (u/fearlessstate5503) on July 4. The Reddit post has received 27,000 upvotes.
Neighbor reported my dad's driveway, so I reported the garage he wasn't supposed to have.

It was a peaceful neighborhood until the man moved in. "From day one, he acted like he owned the place. He was always watching what everyone was doing and complaining about something," the author explained. Things, however, got personal when the entitled man filed a false complaint with the city, citing that the author's father's driveway was built illegally. "The inspector came out, looked at everything for maybe 10 minutes, and basically said everything was fine. That should've been the end of it," they recalled.

Frustrated, the author started investigating the city’s permit records. They realized that the man didn’t have any permit records for a detached garage he had built behind his house. Plus, his property map was way too close to the fence. The author took advantage of the inconsistencies and filed a report with some pictures of his sidewalk. A few days later, the contractors arrived and sliced a bite out of his garage. "Now every time he walks outside, he has to look at our perfectly legal driveway while his garage looks like someone took a giant bite out of it," they added. Moreover, the author explained that their father is still unaware that they had reported the man next door.
In terms of psychology, this man's behaviour is psychological projection, where one person projects their own flaws and thoughts onto another person, as EBSCO explains. Coined by the psychologist Sigmund Freud, psychological projection is a “defense mechanism” in which individuals try to throw their undesirable traits or feelings onto others to avoid confronting them or acknowledging them internally. While the man had code violations in his own house, he projected the allegations onto his neighbor. While this behaviour is almost universal, it could be one of the reasons why 42% of Americans report having engaged in a dispute with a neighbour at some point, according to a FindLaw.com survey.

Meanwhile, Reddit reassured the author for standing up for their father. For instance, u/limlwl commented, “Keep it a secret. Now make another complaint that the half house is not in line with community standards.” Similarly, u/Stealthytulip said, “Something about stone throwing and glass houses, maybe? Bro earned his reward.” u/MT_Pocketss commented, "You are a good kid! If you want to have a little fun, don’t say anything to anyone that you did that. At some point years from now your dad will be talking about how he doesn’t know what happened. That’s when you pull it out. Your dad will be proud and amused."
