'I couldn’t give her what she needed consistently because I could barely take care of myself at times.'

Modern technology hasn’t stopped cheating altogether, but it has certainly made it less easy. A man who goes by the moniker u/kylep789 said he discovered his wife was cheating after checking the location they already shared with each other and then looking through messages on her laptop. The other day, he woke up at 5:30 am and saw that his wife’s location was stuck at a parking lot. The truth came to light when he checked her laptop and found a female contact who had sent her romantic messages. Turned out it was actually a male, and she later told him the other man had been meeting emotional needs she felt were missing from the marriage. His October 12, 2026 Reddit post has since drawn 5,000 upvotes.

Communication crackdown

He had been with his wife for the past 9 years, a significantly long period for someone to cheat clandestinely. Their relationship was smooth sailing until 2 years ago, when the man experienced a mental breakdown. Over time, he became distant in the relationship. “I couldn’t give her what she needed consistently because I could barely take care of myself at times,” he described. Fast-forward to this year, he had recuperated from that state and was the happiest he had ever been in their relationship. However, four months ago, everything changed.

His wife suddenly came to him and said she was thinking of ending the relationship, as resentment had built up inside her due to him going distant. He had thought that while he was depressed, she was standing behind him as a rock. But at this point, he realized she wasn’t making any effort to keep the relationship. He jumped into the realization and was determined to resolve the issues.

Tipping point

The breaking point came when, one day, his wife checked his phone while he was half asleep. She was probably concerned about an old co-worker of his. Obviously, she didn’t find anything, but the episode made the voices in his head scream louder than ever. His suspicions erupted into full-blown shock when they moved cross-country for work. They were settled and happy. But he soon realized that his wife often felt homesick and had to take a trip back home every 4 to 6 weeks. Like her, he too had access to her passwords and location. So he traced her location each time to check whether she reached home safely.

Recognizing patterns

A pattern materialized from the location sharing. She was often in the parking lot. “I noticed she was often in parking lots, which I took as strange, but she always explained she was talking with friends after having dinner or something,” he recalled. Then the other night, when he woke up at 5:30, he noticed that the location was still stuck in the parking lot. He texted her to ask if everything was okay. She responded 3 hours later. Suspicion was brewing in his head. So he opened her laptop to do some digging. Turned out a female contact had asked his wife whether she reached home safely. In reply, she had asked whether they could meet again that evening. The contact messaged, “Yes, I want to. I love you.”

Investigating further, he found that the person was actually a male. When he confronted her, he said she admitted to cheating several times during her trips home, often in the back seat of the other man’s car, and acknowledged having feelings for him. He asked her to leave and go back home, but she couldn’t make a decision on how to handle the matter. “I want to be done, and she seems to want to be done as well, but I don’t know how to just ignore the last 9 years of my life,” the man said.

Sunk cost fallacy

His struggle over whether to walk away after nine years also echoes what psychologists call the sunk cost fallacy — the tendency to weigh past investments of time or effort heavily when deciding whether to continue something, per The Decision Lab. Even though his wife is getting her emotional needs met by another man, he doesn’t want to let her go and end the relationship. Yet, it is not unusual for couples to reconcile and stay together even when one partner gets deviated into an affair.

A study published on June 2, 2026, in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy surveyed 3,429 people affected by infidelity. Among respondents who had cheated, 75.5% said they had ended the affair and remained with their original partner, while 79% of betrayed partners said they were still with the partner who had been unfaithful. However, the researchers stressed that participants were recruited through social-media communities focused on recovering and reconciling after infidelity, meaning the findings should not be taken as representative of all couples dealing with an affair.

Reddit, however, is against their reconciliation. Most, in fact, are urging the man to let go of his wife and move on. u/deadlywhentaken said, “If you forgive her, she will just continue to cheat and have excuses for why. Don't fall into the sunk cost fallacy; you are just entering your 30s and have time to grieve the loss and move on. It's terrible, but it will be worse if you keep wasting time with a woman that doesn't respect you. You won't get over it. I'm a snap of the fingers, but you can start now.” u/Valuable_k added, “If your spouse says ‘I'm thinking about leaving you,' it means it's already over. People don't say that the first day they've been thinking about it. They say it after they've been thinking about it for a long time.”
