The secret letter was from a woman he was once close to before his wedding.
Tony Trapani and his wife always wanted to have kids, but they never conceived. Life continued, and the couple accepted their fate until Tony's wife died, and a letter reunited him with his son. The secret letter, which Tony, then 81, believed his wife had hidden from him for years, was from a woman he was once close to before his wedding, reported by FOX 17.
While cleaning his wife's cabinet, Tony stumbled upon the letter, dated March 1959, but it was the first time he had seen it in over 50 years. The woman Tony had an affair with had reached out, reminiscing about their past and revealing a secret that changed his life forever. "Dear Tony, I bet you are surprised to hear from me after so many years. I was just thinking about you tonight, like so many other nights, but I thought I would write you and find out how you are," the letter read. She went on to drop the secret she had kept from him for 5 years. "Tony, please don't be angry or surprised to hear this. I have a little boy. He is five years old now — grey eyes and beautiful black hair. What I am trying to say, Tony, is he is your son," she wrote. The woman also apologized to Tony and requested that he come and meet his son. "Every day he asks me where his daddy is, and believe me, Tony, I can't even answer him anymore. I would be forever grateful to you if you would just see him. I'll close now, hoping and praying that you will answer. P.S. His name is Samuel Duane," she wrote.
Tony couldn't believe his eyes. His son, Samuel, had been waiting to see his dad all these years, and his father didn't even know about his existence, which broke Tony's heart. For over a year, Tony's sister tried to search for Samuel and finally connected with his wife, Donna. Tony met his son in January 2015, and he said he felt like a new father. Samuel, who always asked his mother about Tony, said she told him that she had sent his father the letter, but he never replied. Growing up in the absence of a parent isn't easy, especially because kids see their peers live their happy family life every single day. In fact, Monica Hayes, through her research, found that kids whose dads were permanently absent had more emotional and behavioral issues. Now, while we don't know if Samuel had a tough time holding his emotional outbursts because of his father's absence, it's certain that he was deeply affected by the situation.
Meanwhile, Tony, still confused about why his wife didn't tell him about the letter, said, "Why didn't my wife tell me. I don't know. She wanted children. She couldn't have any. She tried and tried." On the other hand, Samuel, who had always wanted to meet his father, said, "Just to know him now is so important to me. It's going to fill that void." After spending a week together, Samuel and Tony decided to take a paternity test, but the news wasn't what they had expected. The results came back negative, but that didn't affect Samuel and Tony's bond. "They're keeping that bond. That paper doesn't mean anything to him. That bond has been made, and we're going to move on from here," Donna told Daily Mail.
