'Hang it by the door... this is the cornerstore of your home.'
Moving in with a partner can be a hit or a miss — while some might view moving in early as hasty, relationship timelines vary widely. A Stanford University study on American couples and their dating patterns found that 25% of couples moved in together after four months, 50% moved in after a year, and 70% had moved in with each other after two years. For one couple, the decision came after six months of dating, driven by practical circumstances. But that leap took on deeper meaning when the boyfriend got a handwritten letter from his girlfriend, which he later shared on Reddit under u/A_gon_246.
The 25-year-old explained the background of their new living arrangement. His 26-year-old girlfriend had recently been encouraged to move out by her parents because "they felt like it was time for her to be on her own." While he admitted that he might have preferred to wait a year before cohabiting, he also wrote, "I love this woman with all of my heart and I don’t see myself with anyone else." They found a promising setup with a three-bedroom house shared with one roommate who was frequently away for work, charging $450 rent a month. But even with the financial upside, the transition brought its own challenges.
That context made the letter he found at home all the more meaningful. Dated April 3, 2025, the handwritten note from his girlfriend expressed her hopes, gratitude, and love in clear, heartfelt words. It began, "I’m so excited that we started this new chapter of our lives together. "I’ve been asking myself, what does 'home' mean to me, quite often since we’ve been starting this process. I am blessed and grateful to say that you have always felt like home since the very moment I met you. Having you to share this experience with, allows me to feel at home in the times that everything feels so overwhelming and different."
The letter went on to express her belief in their future and her appreciation for the relationship they’ve built so far: "I hope that us moving in together will strengthen our bond, will show us challenges that will be met with our love and understanding, and I hope we will always remember to not take anything too seriously, as you have taught me so often in our 6 months together." She then listed three things she cherishes about him, sharing that he is "relentlessly optimistic, always grounded, calm and collected, and so mentally strong, beautifully prepared for anything." "You are so smart and I am so proud to call you 'mine.' Thank you for being my rock. I love you," the letter concluded.
Those who read the post were moved by the rare emotional clarity the letter displayed and asked him to cherish it forever. u/Appalachia9841 wrote, "It’s so easy to forget how good we have it — my only advice to you is that you re-read this letter every time you feel the warmth slipping. This woman loves you. She means it. You love her & you mean it, too. Don’t lose sight." u/Interesting_Tune2905 suggested, "Hang it by the door. Touch every time you’re headed out, and every time you return. This is the cornerstone of your home." u/Floppy_Caulk said simply, "This is it. This is the real stuff. I'm so happy for you both." u/SJThaGhost86 shared, "Honestly, this is the type of thing a lot of us men are looking for. Good for you my man!"
