Older woman claimed his 'upgraded seat' because hers wouldn't recline. When the air hostess sided with her, he used their own rules against them

On July 21, 2026, Justin Escalona (@justinescalona) booked an economy seat on a 6 a.m. flight from New York to Los Angeles. Luckily, he got upgraded to the first-class section. But just before take-off, an older woman approached him, asking to swap seats. At first, Escalona agreed because he assumed she wanted a better view, but later, he was shocked to know the real reason. Despite refusing her, the woman forcefully took his seat and refused to move. Frustrated, Escalona decided to record a video to drive the entitled lady out of his seat. His video has received 879,000 views on his Instagram page.

Seat swap gone wrong

Escalona had booked an economy seat on an American Airlines flight because he knew there was a 90% chance he would get upgraded. As expected, he got a first-class cabin. However, moments before takeoff, an elderly woman asked Escalona if she could swap seats with him. He agreed, but when a flight attendant told him the woman's seat did not recline, he immediately demanded his seat back. In Escalona's words, the woman "sprinted" the moment he said yes and refused to get out of his seat. She claimed she deserved the seat because she paid for it while the man hadn't. Pissed, the man asked the crew for help, but no one budged. 

He stood his ground

In a Part 2 video, Escalona shared how one of the flight attendants gave him three options. "Either trade with the woman because she paid and you got upgraded, or you have to go back to your original seat before the upgrade," and the third option was for him to get off the plane. Escalona was not taking any of these options because American Airlines' policy didn't say that "if you are upgraded to first class, your seat is actually worth less than someone who paid full." The man stood firm and finally got his seat back. In fact, he pulled out his phone and started recording the woman sitting in his seat. In the end, Escalona got his seat back.

Flying etiquette 101

There are certain things Americans find unacceptable when flying, and switching seats is one of them. In fact, a 2024 YouGov poll found that 86% say letting children play in the aisle is unacceptable. Similarly, a similar share (82%) believe that getting drunk is bad airplane etiquette, and 26% said asking another person to switch seats is unacceptable. Escalona did not have a problem switching seats with the older woman, but he later refused when he learnt the truth.

Meanwhile, another YouGov survey revealed that 75% of Americans would agree to switch seats if the person wants to sit next to a younger family member, 72% would say yes if the new seat is in a better location, and 66% would do it if the person wanted to sit with their partner. In the woman's case, none of these applied. She just wanted a better seat and felt entitled to it because she paid for it. 

'The lady deserves to be angry with the airline. But not at you'

Escalona's comment section was a mix of opinions. Some people pointed out that his seat was just an upgrade, while others said the woman had the right to be angry, but not at him. @indielove88 wrote, "The lady deserves to be angry with the airline. But not at you. It’s not your responsibility." @1superchica commented, "Seriously? You got in trouble? That’s crazy. If you got upgraded, it’s for a reason, and that was your seat."
